TD ABUJA, NIGERIA — A fresh political storm erupted this week after Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi alleged that the Tinubu administration is deliberately frustrating his personal and political activities.
Presidential aide, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, reacting sharply, dismissed the claims as “lies and propaganda.”
Obi’s Allegations
In a recent interview, Obi expressed concern for his safety ahead of the January 2027 elections, saying:
“I might not even be alive. I’m telling you, every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating me. Deliberately so.”
He recounted an incident at an airport where his car was locked by staff despite other vehicles being parked nearby.
Obi suggested the action was politically motivated, claiming that even acquaintances avoid greeting him in public for fear of government reprisal.
Obi further alleged that invitations to social events have been withdrawn under pressure, portraying a climate of intimidation.
He framed his experience as symptomatic of a divided country.
He said his mission is to “bring back unity where there’s division” and restore compassion and care in governance.

Onanuga’s Response
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, responded sharply via social media, branding Obi a “pathological and serial liar.”
He argued that Obi’s complaints were exaggerated personal inconveniences, not evidence of government persecution.
Onanuga wrote:
“His claim that he may not be alive for the January 2027 election and that people are being pressured not to invite him to social events is nothing more than a fabricated narrative, a page from his book of lies and propaganda.”
He also pointed to Obi’s business interests, noting that Fidelity Bank — where Obi holds a stake — continues to thrive under Tinubu’s economic reforms.
Onanuga insisted that the government is not targeting the bank or Obi, but remains focused on consolidating reforms for the benefit of Nigerians.
Political Context and Public Reaction
The exchange underscores the increasingly tense political climate as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections.
Obi, who ran as a major opposition candidate in 2023, has continued to position himself as a voice for reform and unity.
His allegations of harassment resonate with supporters who view him as a victim of political suppression.
For the Tinubu administration, however, such claims are seen as attempts to undermine its credibility.
Officials argue that the government is focused on economic stabilization and governance reforms, not opposition figures.
The back-and-forth has sparked debate among Nigerians.
Supporters of Obi see his statements as evidence of shrinking democratic space.
Meanwhile, critics argue he is dramatizing routine inconveniences to gain sympathy.
Analysts note that accusations of political intimidation are not new in Nigeria’s electoral history.
However, the sharp rhetoric from both sides highlights the stakes as the country heads toward another contentious vote.
