TDÂ Every republic rests on a simple covenant: those who seek to govern must first tell the truth about who they are. In Nigeria, that covenant has been shredded by the man who occupies Aso Rock.
The documented record of Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s so-called American education is not a story of one clerical error, as his lawyers would have Nigerians believe.
It is a twenty-seven-year trail of sworn contradictions, phantom schools, a university he never attended, and a “replacement certificate” that the issuing institution itself says it never issued.
Let the record speak.
Lie One: The University of Chicago
In an affidavit sworn before the Ikeja Division of the High Court of Lagos State on 29 December 1998, and in his INEC Form CF.001 ahead of the 1999 Lagos governorship election, Tinubu claimed on oath that he attended the University of Chicago.
One of the finest institutions in the United States, Tinubu claimed he graduated in 1976 with a degree in economics.
He did not.
The late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, exposed this falsehood and sued him in October 1999 for false statement and declaration on oath.
Tinubu quietly dropped the University of Chicago from his 2023 filings.
He has never withdrawn or explained the original sworn claim. In law, that is not a mistake. It is perjury by another name.
Lie Two: The Primary School That Never Existed
Tinubu swore that he attended St Paul, Aroloya, Lagos, for his primary education, alongside Children’s Home School, Ibadan, which he claimed to have left in 1964.
Investigations have found no record that the Aroloya school he described ever existed.
A man swore an educational history into existence, and a nation was expected to believe it.
Lie Three: Government College, Ibadan
He claimed on oath to have attended Government College, Ibadan, from 1965 to 1968.
The old boys’ association of that proud institution has publicly debunked the claim.
This, too, formed part of Fawehinmi’s 1999 suit.
And this, too, silently vanished from Tinubu’s later filings without retraction or apology.
Lie Four: The Education That Evaporated
Here the story turns from tragedy to farce.
In 1999 and again in 2003, Tinubu’s election submissions claimed a full educational journey: St Paul’s, Children’s Home School, Government College Ibadan, Richard Daley College, Chicago.
Yet in his 2023 affidavit to INEC, the columns for primary and secondary education were left blank. Nothing. Empty.
As Atiku Abubakar rightly demanded: how does a man obtain a university degree with no primary and no secondary education whatsoever?
Two sworn accounts of one life cannot both be true. One of them is a lie told under oath — and by his own hand, at least one of them is.
Lie Five: The Stolen Certificate Fable
Tinubu told INEC that when he returned from self-imposed exile in 1998, he discovered that his certificates had been looted by “unknown persons.”
A touching story — demolished by the very institution he invokes.
On 3 October 2023, the Registrar of Chicago State University deposed on oath that Tinubu never collected his original certificate from CSU at all.
One cannot lose in Lagos what one never collected in Chicago. The fable collapses under its own weight.
Lie Six: The Certificate CSU Says It Never Issued
When Chicago State University’s records were finally pried open by order of a United States federal court — an order Tinubu fought desperately, all the way to the brink, to block — the documents raised more questions than they answered.
The “replacement certificate” Tinubu paraded before INEC does not match the diplomas the university issued in 1979.
Independent fact-checkers reviewing the 32-page release concluded that the replacement certificate he presented was not issued by the university.
Why does a man with nothing to hide spend a fortune in legal fees to hide it?
Lie Seven: Three Birth Dates and Two Genders
The admission records tell their own story. One document: male, born 29 March 1952. Another: female, born 29 March 1954.
The CSU admissions application: born 29 March 1955.
The Southwest College transcript with which “Tinubu Bola A.” gained admission to CSU identifies the bearer as “FEMALE”.
His lawyers call it a “scrivener’s error.” Perhaps. But a scrivener’s error does not explain three different birth years.
A scrivener’s error does not explain why the profile published at his 1999 inauguration says 1952 while his own transcript says 1954.
Documents do not contradict themselves; people do.
The Escape Hatch: Section 308
Why was none of this ever adjudicated on the merits?
Because in 1999, by the time the petitions of Alhaji Jameed Seriki and Dr Waliu Balogun-Smith landed and Fawehinmi filed suit, Tinubu was already Governor of Lagos State — cloaked in the immunity of Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution.
Fawehinmi fought the matter to the Supreme Court, which dismissed it on technical grounds, never on the merits.
The great Gani died in 2009 without his answer. Nigeria is still waiting for it.
The Verdict of the Record
Let us be precise, because precision is what this presidency fears most.
Chicago State University confirms that a student named Bola Tinubu attended and graduated in June 1979.
That single confirmed fact is the fig leaf behind which everything else hides.
Around it stands the documented wreckage:

a top American university falsely claimed on oath;

a primary school that never existed;

a secondary school that denies him;

an educational history sworn in 1999 and erased in 2023;

a “lost” certificate the university says was never collected;
-
a replacement certificate the university’s own 1979 records do not match;
-
three birth dates;
-
two genders.
Any one of these might be an error. Together, they are a pattern.
And a pattern of false declarations on oath has a name in every legal system on earth: perjury.
In any serious democracy, a fraction of this record would have ended a career.

Tinubu, with a dossier of contradictions spanning three decades, sits in Aso Rock and dares Nigerians to look away.
We will not look away. The documents are public. The depositions are sworn. The contradictions are his own.
History does not forget men who lied their way to power — it merely waits for the moment to say so out loud.
