TDFormer Governor of Kano State and Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has filed legal action against Primate Elijah Ayodele, leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, over remarks deemed defamatory and injurious to his political reputation.
This was contained in a demand letter dated June 11, 2026, issued by Kwankwaso’s legal team, Magaji Mato Ibrahim, SAN & Co.
According to the demand letter, the cleric is accused of making libelous statements during a live-streamed church service.
In the viral video, Ayodele allegedly declared among other libelous comments while purporting to be a preacher:
- “Kwankwaso is a fake to Obi”;
- “Kwankwaso will betray you”;
- “Kwankwaso has been paid to be Vice President to Obi”;
Kwankwaso Issues Legal Ultimatum
Kwankwaso’s lawyers described the comments as “unprovoked, grossly unfounded, and carefully designed to create a rift within the ranks of the political party and its supporters.”
The demand letter issued a 24-hour ultimatum for Primate Ayodele to:
- Publish a full and unequivocal retraction across all social media platforms and news outlets, with the same prominence as the original video.
- Issue a written undertaking to desist from making further malicious statements against Kwankwaso.
Failure to comply, the letter warned, would trigger immediate legal proceedings.
Kwankwaso intends to seek ₦10 billion in damages alongside full indemnity costs and other reliefs if and when the matter gets to arbitration.

Political Context
Kwankwaso, who was announced as running mate to Peter Obi under the NDC ticket, has faced scrutiny from critics questioning the stability of the alliance.
The alleged prophecy by Primate Ayodele, widely circulated online, intensified speculation about internal divisions within the opposition party.
Kwankwaso’s swift legal response signals an effort to protect his political credibility and maintain unity within the NDC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Cleric’s Influence and Controversy
Primate Ayodele is known for making political prophecies that often stir public debate.
His predictions have previously targeted presidents, governors, and lawmakers, drawing both attention and criticism.
This latest controversy underscores the growing tension between religious commentary and political campaigns in Nigeria, where clerics wield significant influence over public opinion.

Next Steps for Kwankwaso, Ayodele
As of press time, Primate Ayodele has not issued a public response to the demand letter.
Legal analysts note that the case could set a precedent for how Nigerian courts handle defamatory claims arising from religious prophecies.
Kwankwaso’s legal team has emphasized that they are prepared to pursue the matter vigorously.
The team insisted that “no one, under the guise of prophecy, should be allowed to malign the integrity of a public figure without consequence.”
Kwankwaso’s lawsuit against Primate Ayodele highlights the collision of politics and prophecy in Nigeria’s public sphere.
With ₦10 billion in damages at stake, the case could reshape the boundaries of free speech, accountability, and the role of religious leaders in political discourse.
