TDFormer Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially picked the presidential nomination form of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), signaling his formal entry into the race ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The form was picked up on his behalf by members of the Obidient Movement.
The development has generated excitement among supporters across the country.
It comes amid months of speculation over Obi’s political future and possible alliances with opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling party in the next presidential contest.
Sources within the coalition disclosed that Obi completed the necessary documentation and consultations before obtaining the form at the party’s national secretariat on Monday.
Party officials described the move as a “major milestone” for the NDC as it prepares to position itself as a formidable force in the upcoming elections.
Speaking shortly after the exercise, Obi reiterated his commitment to building “a new Nigeria anchored on competence, accountability, security and economic revival.”
He said the country urgently needs leadership focused on production, youth empowerment and national unity.
“We must move beyond politics of division and focus on rescuing Nigeria from economic hardship, insecurity and poor governance,” Obi reportedly told supporters gathered at the venue.
His entrance into the NDC presidential race is expected to reshape the opposition landscape, especially as discussions continue around possible coalition arrangements involving key political stakeholders across the country.
Political observers believe Obi’s popularity among young Nigerians and urban voters could strengthen the NDC’s national appeal ahead of the polls.
His supporters, popularly known as the “Obidient Movement,” have already taken to social media to celebrate the announcement, describing it as the beginning of a new political chapter.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the development, with analysts predicting intense political realignments in the coming months as parties begin preparations for primaries and coalition negotiations.
The NDC leadership assured members and supporters that the party would conduct a transparent and credible primary process, emphasizing its commitment to internal democracy and issue-based campaigns.
With Obi now formally in the race, attention is expected to shift toward other major opposition figures and whether broader alliances will emerge before the 2027 presidential election.
