TD ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigerian Women International Alliance (NWIA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure an independent, transparent, and credible investigation into the death of physiotherapist Mary Habila.
Habila’s reported death at the residence of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has attracted public attention.
In an open letter dated July 13, 2026, the organisation said the circumstances surrounding Habila’s reported death warranted a thorough and impartial investigation to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.
The letter was jointly signed by the group’s President, Mrs. Omolara Abike, Vice President, Mrs. Ogonna Chiedum, and Secretary, Dr. Mariam Adeosun.
Group Emphasises Due Process
The NWIA stressed that its call should not be interpreted as an accusation against any individual, maintaining that every Nigerian is entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence and due process.
According to the organisation, an independent investigation would help establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.
“The reported death of Mary Habila, a physiotherapist, at the residence of the Honourable Minister of Works has generated significant public concern and deserves a thorough, independent, professional and transparent investigation,” the group stated.
Call for Transparency
The alliance noted that while relevant authorities were already investigating the incident, public confidence would be enhanced by a process that is transparent, impartial, and free from undue influence.
It urged President Tinubu to ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined and that the findings of the investigation are made public in accordance with the law.
According to the group, a credible investigation would not only clarify the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death but also reinforce confidence in Nigeria’s institutions of justice and accountability.
The NWIA concluded by reiterating that its appeal was motivated by the need for truth, justice, and transparency, while respecting the legal rights of all individuals involved until investigations are concluded.
