TD Berlin, Germany — Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has said Nigeria’s future depends on competent leadership, stronger democratic institutions, and productive partnerships with the international community.
Obi made the remarks after participating in a high-level roundtable discussion titled “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” hosted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) at its office in Berlin, Germany.
According to Obi, the event brought together policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders, representatives of international organisations, and members of the international media to examine Nigeria’s future and its role in an increasingly interconnected global landscape.
Emphasis on SMEs and Development
Obi said discussions focused on Nigeria’s democratic journey beyond the 2027 general elections, international affairs, development cooperation, and strengthening bilateral partnerships to accelerate economic growth and improve the lives of Nigerians.
He noted that a key aspect of the engagement was expanding international support for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

He described the engagement as the backbone of every productive economy due to their role in job creation, innovation, wealth creation, and sustainable national development.
Participants also exchanged views on strengthening democratic institutions, boosting trade and investment, promoting regional stability, improving governance, and creating an enabling environment capable of attracting both local and foreign investment.
Global Interest in Nigeria
Obi expressed appreciation for what he described as the genuine interest shown by participants in Nigeria’s future.
He noted that the presence of senior representatives from the German Federal Government, development agencies, business associations, policy institutes, foundations, international organisations, and global media reflected Nigeria’s strategic importance on the international stage.

Call for Accountable Leadership
During the discussions, Obi reiterated his belief that Nigeria possesses the human and natural resources needed to become a prosperous, secure, and globally competitive nation.
He argued that achieving this potential requires “competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership” that prioritises investment in education, healthcare, productive enterprise, the rule of law, and strong institutions rather than what he described as “politics of consumption.”
Obi further stated that Nigeria must make deliberate choices to transition “from consumption to production, from poverty to prosperity, and from division to unity” through good governance, fiscal responsibility, and productive international partnerships.

Appreciation to ECFR
The former Anambra State governor thanked the European Council on Foreign Relations for the invitation and commended participants for what he described as a frank and constructive exchange of ideas.
He concluded by reaffirming his signature message: “A New Nigeria Is Possible.”
