TD LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State chapter of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has thrown its weight behind Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an independent investigation into the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The party argued that a transparent probe is necessary to uncover the truth and deliver justice.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Ayodele Kazeem.
The opposition party expressed concern over what it described as the swift rejection of the proposal by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Nigerian Senate, and Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
According to the party, opposition to an independent investigation raises questions about why certain political actors are unwilling to support what it described as a transparent and credible process.
“If everyone is genuinely interested in uncovering the truth behind the Oriire school kidnapping, there should be no objection to a transparent, credible, and independent investigation,” the statement said.
It added that those with nothing to hide should have no reason to oppose such an exercise.
APM Defends International Support for Justice
The Lagos APM also argued that seeking assistance or involvement from international institutions in matters relating to justice, accountability, or human rights does not undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The party maintained that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and a member of the United Nations.
Therefore, it is entitled to cooperate with international bodies where necessary to promote transparency and uphold global standards.
It further noted what it described as an inconsistency among critics of Governor Makinde’s position.
It claimed that some of the same political figures had previously sought international intervention during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan over issues of insecurity and governance.
According to the party, Nigerians deserve consistency rather than what it termed selective outrage driven by political considerations.
Calls for Justice and Security Reforms
The APM said attention should remain focused on identifying those responsible for the Oriire school kidnapping, exposing any collaborators, investigating possible security lapses, and ensuring that all those found culpable face prosecution.
Describing itself as the leading opposition party in Lagos State, the party stressed that the lives of innocent schoolchildren should never become subjects of partisan politics.
It, thus, insisted that public safety must take precedence over political interests.
The party called on the Federal Government, the National Assembly, and security agencies to support every lawful effort aimed at uncovering the truth behind the incident.
According to the statement, attempts to discourage calls for an independent investigation could deepen public suspicion and weaken confidence in state institutions.
Push for Stronger Security Measures
Beyond the immediate investigation, the APM said the Oriire incident highlights the need for broader security reforms across the country.
It advocated improved intelligence gathering, stronger collaboration among security agencies.
It also sought constitutional measures that would enable state governments to play more effective roles in safeguarding lives and property.
The party concluded that the victims deserve justice, their families deserve answers, and Nigerians deserve the truth.
It urged political leaders not to politicize Governor Makinde’s call for an independent investigation, describing it as an opportunity to reinforce public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions and demonstrate that no individual or institution is beyond scrutiny when innocent lives are at stake.
