TDThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has entered a new phase of leadership as its Board of Trustees (BoT), under the Chairmanship of Senator Adolphus Wabara, formally assumed control of the party’s national affairs.
This follows a landmark Supreme Court judgment delivered on Thursday, April 30, 2026, which invalidated recent conventions and leadership structures within the party.
Supreme Court Decision
The ruling delivered by a five-member panel of justices struck at the heart of the PDP’s recent leadership struggles:
- The Court declared the November 15–16, 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, invalid.
That convention had produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee.
- In addition, the Court upheld the suspension of three key officials:
- Senator Samuel Anyanwu (National Secretary),
- Hon. Umar Bature (National Organizing Secretary), and,
- Barr. Kamaldeen Ajibade (National Legal Adviser).
- As a direct consequence, all actions taken by these suspended officials were declared illegal, null, and void
These include:
-
- appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman,
- the formation of a National Caretaker Working Committee, and,
- the conduct of the March 29, 2026, Abuja Convention.
This sweeping judgment effectively dismantled both the Turaki-led and Mohammed-led committees, leaving the party without a recognized national leadership structure.
BoT Steps In
Faced with the leadership vacuum, the PDP’s Board of Trustees invoked Section 32(5) of the party’s Constitution (as amended in 2017), which empowers the BoT to step in as the second highest organ of the party.
- The BoT announced it would immediately assume responsibility for national leadership as a constitutional safeguard.
- Plans are underway to convene an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, where an Interim National Working Committee will be appointed.
The committee will manage the party’s affairs and ensure compliance with timelines set by the Electoral Act, 2026.
- PDP staff have been directed to resume duties at the National Secretariat under BoT supervision.
The BoT emphasized that this intervention is aimed at stabilizing the party, salvaging its structures, and preparing it to contest and win in the 2027 general elections.
Call for Unity and Reconciliation
BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara commended the resilience of PDP governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, the National Assembly caucus, state chairmen, youth and women wings, and other organs for standing firm during the crisis.
He urged members to put aside factional interests and embrace reconciliation.
He stressed that the party’s internal divisions have already inflicted damage not just on the PDP but on the Nigerian people who look to the party for leadership.
“The PDP has suffered enough; the painful victims of this unfortunate episode is the Nigerian people.
“The time has therefore come for us to make sacrifices, sheathe our swords and embrace genuine reconciliations for lasting peace,” Senator Wabara said.
Context and Implications
This development marks one of the most significant constitutional interventions in the PDP’s history.
The Supreme Court’s ruling underscores the importance of internal party discipline and adherence to constitutional provisions.
Analysts note that the BoT’s takeover could either unify the party ahead of the 2027 elections or deepen existing fractures if reconciliation efforts fail.
The PDP, once Nigeria’s dominant political party, has faced years of internal strife and leadership tussles.
The BoT’s move is seen as a last-ditch effort to restore credibility and position the party as a viable alternative in the next electoral cycle.
