Residents of Ikom, Cross River State, were left in shock last week after a popular akara (bean cake) vendor was caught mixing human feces with beans used to prepare akara, a popular Nigerian delicacy, for public consumption.
The elderly woman, well-known for selling akara and bread along Ani Street, Ikom Obudu Road, was exposed by her own customers who had gone to patronize her business.
According to eyewitnesses, suspicions arose when she tried to conceal a substance, but the crowd forcefully uncovered it, revealing human stool mixed with beans.
When confronted, the vendor admitted to the act, claiming it was “the handwork of the devil.”
She further confessed that she had been engaging in the practice for a long time, saying it is a fetish ritual to attract more customers.
The revelation sparked outrage among residents, many of whom expressed disgust and anger at what they described as a betrayal of trust.
Community members lamented that they may have unknowingly consumed contaminated food for years.
This disturbing incident raises broader concerns about food safety and hygiene practices in Nigeria.
It also highlights the contradiction between individuals who condemn government corruption yet engage in harmful and unethical practices themselves.
Authorities are expected to investigate the matter further, while health officials have urged residents to be cautious about where they purchase food.
