TD Abuja, FCT — Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has detailed his meeting with the outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery.

Obi highlighted discussions on democracy, the economy, institutional strengthening, and the importance of credible elections.

He shared the update on his official X account, accompanied by four professional photographs.

The photographs showed him and Montgomery shaking hands, conversing, posing together, and walking in a garden setting during the formal diplomatic engagement.

Key Discussion Points

Obi said the meeting focused on Nigeria’s democratic journey and the need to ensure that elections remain free, fair, and reflective of the people’s will.

He emphasized the importance of strengthening institutions to safeguard democracy and promote economic stability.

“We had a thoughtful discussion on the state of our democracy, the economy, the importance of strengthening our institutions, and the need to ensure that our elections remain free, fair, credible, and truly reflective of the will of the Nigerian people,” Obi wrote.

Appreciation for UK-Nigeria Relations

Dr. Montgomery prepares to conclude his diplomatic assignment in Nigeria next month.

Meanwhile, Obi expressed gratitude for his service and the role he played in reinforcing the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

He praised the commissioner’s constructive engagement and support for Nigeria’s democratic and economic development, particularly during a period marked by political and economic challenges.

“I thanked him for the friendship and cooperation he has extended to Nigeria throughout his tenure.

“I look forward to seeing the strong relationship between our two countries continue to grow,” Obi added.

Broader Context

The UK has been a key partner in Nigeria’s governance and development, supporting electoral reforms, economic initiatives, and humanitarian programs.

Montgomery’s tenure included active engagement with civil society and government institutions, reinforcing bilateral ties.

Obi’s meeting comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, with debates intensifying around governance, transparency, and economic recovery.

His emphasis on credible elections and institutional strengthening aligns with his broader campaign message of building a “New Nigeria.”

The meeting between Peter Obi and Dr. Richard Montgomery underscores the importance of international partnerships in Nigeria’s democratic and developmental journey.

As Montgomery departs, Obi’s remarks reflect both appreciation for past cooperation and optimism for continued UK-Nigeria relations.

Obi closed his statement with his signature phrase: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
