TDFormer Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, on Tuesday held a strategic meeting with the United States Consul General in Lagos, Rick Swart.
The meeting focused on Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, which took place in Lagos, centered on the need for credible, transparent, and interference-free elections in Nigeria.
Both parties emphasized the importance of electoral reforms to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure a level playing field for all political actors, particularly opposition parties.
Obi, in a statement following the engagement, noted that the discussions also explored ways to deepen bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States.
According to him, they paid particular attention to trade and business opportunities.
He stressed the importance of creating an enabling environment where democracy can thrive and political participation remains inclusive.
“We focused on promoting credible elections in Nigeria, ensuring they are free from interference, and fostering a space where all political parties, especially opposition parties, can thrive and contribute,” Obi stated.
He further described the meeting as productive.
He expressed optimism that future elections in Nigeria would reflect higher standards of transparency and credibility.
Obi was accompanied to the meeting by Dr. Adefolaseye Adebomi Adebayo.
