TDPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

President Tinubu also approved a ₦15 billion take-off grant to support its development.

The move is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen policing education, institutional governance, and national security.

New Police Academy Campus

According to the announcement, the ₦15 billion intervention fund will be sourced from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2026 allocation.

The grant will finance infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and training assets at the new campus.

The approval fulfilled provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021.

The Act mandated the expansion of the academy to meet modern policing needs.

The decision followed a consultative meeting involving government officials and security agencies, which recommended the siting of the new campus in Ogun State.

Officials say the expansion will enhance the training of police officers and improve professionalism.

It will further provide a stronger foundation for law enforcement in Nigeria.

Reconstitution of Police Academy Council

In a related development, President Tinubu has reconstituted the 16-member governing council of the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, has been appointed chairman.

Other members include the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, the Inspector-General of Police, and representatives from the Federal Ministries of Education, Finance, and Justice.

Six persons were appointed to represent Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones:

  1. Babagana Zannah Adam (DCP Rtd.) — North East
  2. Emmanuel Torkuma Manger — North Central
  3. Maigari Abati Dikko (DIG Rtd.) — North West
  4. Dubem A. Obaze (KSM) — South East
  5. Ajibogere Toyin — South West
  6. Udom Udo Ekpoudom (DIG Rtd.) — South South

The Commandant of the Academy, the Provost, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of training will serve as ex officio members.

Meanwhile, the Registrar of the Academy will act as secretary.

Implications for Policing

The dual announcements — the establishment of a new campus and the reconstitution of the governing council — signal a renewed commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s police training infrastructure.

  • Capacity Building: The new campus will expand opportunities for police cadets and officers to receive advanced training.
  • Governance: The reconstituted council is expected to provide stronger oversight and ensure accountability in the academy’s operations.
  • National Security: By investing in education and training, the government aims to build a more professional police force capable of addressing Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

President Tinubu’s approval of a new Police Academy campus with a ₦15 billion take-off grant, alongside the reconstitution of the Wudil council, marks a significant step in reforming Nigeria’s policing system.

The initiatives are expected to strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education, and enhance national security in the years ahead.
