TD Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team has issued a sharp condemnation of remarks made by Mr. Chigozie Nnabugwu on News Central Television, where he publicly urged the Nigerian Government to kill Kanu “for normalcy to return to the Southeast.”

In a press release dated July 21, 2026, Special Counsel Aloy Ejimakor described the statement as “reckless, irresponsible, and unlawful”.

Ejimakor stressed that it constitutes a direct threat to life and risks inciting public disorder.

Legal Implications Highlighted

The legal team noted that the video, published at 1:14 PM on July 19, 2026, via News Central TV’s verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, went viral shortly after release.

Ejimakor emphasized that such calls strain the boundaries of Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes Act.

The Act criminalises the intentional transmission of messages that threaten life or incite breakdown of law and order.

Violations carry penalties of up to ₦7 million in fines or three years’ imprisonment.

Additional liabilities, the statement warned, may arise under the Criminal Code for incitement to violence and related offences.

Potential Sanctions for Broadcaster

Beyond Nnabugwu’s remarks, the legal team faulted News Central TV for airing and amplifying the inflammatory content without due caution.

Ejimakor warned that the station could face regulatory sanctions for breaching broadcast codes on incitement and public order, as well as contributory liability under relevant laws.

He further argued that demanding extrajudicial execution while legal proceedings remain before the court undermines the judicial process and may amount to contempt of court.

Demands for Retraction and Apology

The legal team demanded that Mr. Nnabugwu issue an immediate public retraction of his statement and that News Central TV tender an unqualified televised apology.

The press release also served as a pre-action notice, signaling that legal proceedings will follow if remedial measures are not taken.

Ejimakor reaffirmed that Kanu’s legal team is actively reviewing all available legal options and will pursue formal complaints with the appropriate authorities.

He stressed that broadcasters and individuals must act responsibly.

He warned that hate speech and calls for extrajudicial killings will not be tolerated under Nigerian law.
