TD Abuja, Nigeria — The NDC-Peter Obi Support Network (NDC-POSN) has expressed concern over recent claims by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, alleging that he is facing systematic harassment and intimidation.
The group warned that such actions could threaten Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its spokesperson, Mrs. Mercy L. Akums, the support group said it was “deeply alarmed” by comments by Obi.
Obi made remarks during an interview on the With Chude programme hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo.
According to the group, Obi alleged that the Federal Government had been deliberately frustrating his personal and business activities and expressed fears about his safety before the 2027 presidential election.
The former Anambra State governor was quoted as saying:
“With the way this government is going, I may not even be alive to contest the 2027 election.
Every single thing I do for a living, this government is deliberately frustrating.
I face frustration every day. They recently locked my car at the airport.”
Obi also claimed that he faces daily acts of intimidation, alleging that associates now avoid being publicly linked with him for fear of possible reprisals.
According to the NDC-POSN, Obi cited an incident in which his vehicle was allegedly locked at an airport while other vehicles were not affected.
He described it as one of several examples of what he considers targeted harassment.
Support Group Condemns Alleged Intimidation
Reacting to the remarks, the support network said any attempt to intimidate opposition politicians, frustrate their lawful activities, or isolate them socially and economically poses a threat to democratic governance.
The group declared its solidarity with Obi and the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Team, stating that it rejects all forms of intimidation against opposition figures and their supporters.
“The NDC-POSN views these developments with the utmost seriousness,” the statement said.
It added that harassment of political opponents undermines constitutional rights and could affect the credibility of the 2027 elections.
Calls for Investigation and Security Protection
The organisation called on the Federal Government to investigate Obi’s allegations transparently.
It demanded that no government institution or official engages in actions capable of endangering political opponents or restricting lawful political participation.
It also urged security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), to provide adequate protection for Obi, his family, and other political actors exercising their democratic rights.
In addition, the group appealed to political stakeholders to uphold the rule of law, respect human rights, and protect the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the next general election.
Reaffirms Support for Obi-Kwankwaso Ticket
The NDC-POSN reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising support across Nigeria and the diaspora for the NDC presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in the 2027 election.
The group urged its members and supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding despite what it described as growing political tensions.
It maintained that its campaign for “a New Nigeria” would continue through lawful and democratic means.
It further insisted that attempts to intimidate opposition voices would not deter its activities.
The Federal Government has not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the statement as of the time of filing this report.
