TDFormer Kano State Governor and prominent political figure Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a significant realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Kwankwaso made the announcement at the residence of Senator Seriake Dickson in Abuja.

He described the move as a “bold and decisive step” rooted in his commitment to democratic values.

He called on supporters and well-meaning Nigerians to rally behind the NDC, pledging to provide a credible platform for citizens to thrive and realize their full potential.

Taking to his social media handle, Kwankwaso stated:

“Yesterday, we took a bold and decisive step by formally joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

“We are determined to provide our people with a credible platform where they can thrive and realise their full potential.”

 Clarification on Political Position

Just a day earlier, on May 2, Kwankwaso issued a clarification regarding his political future amid speculation about his role in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He noted as follows:

The Supreme Court judgment affirmed the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee but remitted the matter back to the High Court, leaving the ADC in a precarious position.

The Federal High Court had delegitimised the party’s recent convention, while the Attorney General of the Federation applied to deregister the ADC.

Kwankwaso and his associates had begun consultations with leaders of the NDC, PRP, and other parties to safeguard democratic interests.

He emphasized that he had not declared for the presidency nor endorsed any aspirant.

He recalled his history of supporting party unity over personal ambition in past contests.

 Political Context

Kwankwaso’s move comes after his departure from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing externally influenced legal challenges.

His shift to the NDC signals a new chapter in his political journey, potentially strengthening the party’s profile ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Analysts note that Kwankwaso’s influence, particularly in northern Nigeria, could significantly bolster the NDC’s grassroots appeal.

His track record of participation in major presidential primaries across APC and PDP underscores his stature as a seasoned political actor.

 Implications

  • For NDC: Kwankwaso’s entry is expected to energize the party and attract new supporters.
  • For ADC: The party faces mounting legal and structural challenges, with key figures departing.
  • For Nigeria’s Democracy: The development highlights ongoing realignments as politicians seek stable platforms ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s formal declaration for the NDC marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s evolving political scene.

While his presidential ambitions remain unannounced, his move underscores a broader push for credible platforms and renewed democratic engagement.
