TDFormer Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general election, following a ratification exercise conducted by a faction of the opposition party in Abuja on Saturday.
At the party’s convention, former Information Minister Jerry Gana received Jonathan’s Certificate of Return on his behalf after the former president was absent from the event. The certificate was presented by the party’s Interim National Working Committee led by Kabiru Turaki.
The development has thrust Jonathan back into the political spotlight amid growing discussions about the opposition’s strategy for the 2027 presidential election. Party leaders, delegates, former ministers, state officials and supporters reportedly attended the convention where Jonathan’s candidacy was formally ratified.
Speaking after receiving the certificate, Gana represented Jonathan at the event as party stakeholders endorsed the former president’s emergence. The ratification exercise was conducted by the Turaki-led faction of the PDP, which maintains that its actions are in line with judicial pronouncements relating to the party’s leadership structure.
However, the process was not without controversy. Reports indicated that the convention venue was changed following security concerns and disputes surrounding the event. Jonathan himself did not attend the ceremony, while questions continue to surround the legitimacy of competing leadership claims within the PDP.
According to reports, the original venue of the convention was abandoned after access challenges, prompting organizers to move proceedings to another location in Abuja where the Certificate of Return was eventually presented to Gana on Jonathan’s behalf.
Political analysts say Jonathan’s emergence could significantly reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, although uncertainty remains over the broader leadership crisis within the PDP and whether all party stakeholders will align behind the former president’s candidacy.
The latest development comes as Nigeria’s political parties continue preparations for the next general election, with major opposition figures and parties positioning themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive contest.
This report is based on accounts published on Saturday regarding the convention organized by the Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the PDP, where Jonathan was ratified and a Certificate of Return was presented on his behalf.
