TD Lagos, Nigeria — The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken delivery of five new helicopters, marking a major step in the Federal Government’s ongoing programme to modernise Nigeria’s airpower capabilities and strengthen the Armed Forces’ ability to respond to contemporary security challenges.

The new platforms comprise three AW-109 Trekker B helicopters manufactured by Leonardo Helicopters of Italy and two H-125 helicopters manufactured by Airbus Helicopters.

The AW-109s, which form part of a batch of 10 recently acquired by the Federal Government, were received in Lagos on September 15, with the remaining seven expected before the end of 2026.

The two H-125s had been delivered earlier, adding to the Service’s growing rotary-wing fleet.

CAS Reaction

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, hailed the acquisition as “another significant milestone in the Federal Government’s sustained investment in the modernisation and re-equipment of the NAF.”

“The arrival of these five helicopters provides greater flexibility in the employment of airpower in support of ground troops in ongoing operations,” Aneke said.

He expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his confidence in and commitment to the NAF.

He noted that the President’s support is enabling the Service to progressively build the capabilities required to confront Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Operational Impact

The new helicopters are expected to significantly boost the NAF’s operational capacity across multiple theatres:

  • AW-109 Trekker B helicopters will enhance capabilities in:
    • Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR)
    • Close air support for ground forces
    • Armed escort missions
    • Combat search and rescue operations
    • Joint operations in support of surface forces

  • H-125 helicopters will provide:
    • Versatile light helicopter support
    • Rapid deployment for diverse operational requirements
    • Increased responsiveness in counter-terrorism, anti-banditry, and anti-kidnapping missions

Together, these platforms expand the NAF’s flexibility and responsiveness, improving the speed, reach, and effectiveness of air support to ground troops.

Next Steps

Following their arrival, the helicopters are undergoing post-delivery assembly and technical checks, including crew-readiness processes, ahead of induction into active service.

Air Marshal Aneke emphasised that the NAF’s responsibility is to ensure that every aircraft delivered translates into tangible operational effects.

“We will continue to prioritise effective employment, maintenance and logistics sustainment so that every aircraft adds measurable value to ongoing operations and the protection of lives and property of Nigerians,” he stated.

Strategic Significance

The delivery of these helicopters underscores the Federal Government’s determination to modernise Nigeria’s airpower and strengthen the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces.

Beyond expanding the fleet, the new platforms are expected to:

  • Enhance operational sustainability in prolonged missions
  • Provide decisive airpower effects in joint operations
  • Improve the protection of communities against insurgency and criminal networks
  • Contribute to a safer and more secure Nigeria

This acquisition reflects a broader strategic vision to ensure that Nigeria’s Armed Forces remain equipped to meet the demands of modern warfare.

It, meanwhile, will reassure citizens of the government’s commitment to national security.
