THIS DAWN — The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) convened on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the party’s National Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, where they realigned behind the chairmanship of Barrister Julius Abure.
Key resolutions were adopted to reaffirm leadership structures and strengthen internal governance.
The meeting, which commenced at 10:00 a.m., was attended by:
- members of the National Working Committee (NWC),
- national officers,
- state chairmen and secretaries,
- stakeholders, and,
- co-opted NEC members, as provided under Article 13 (A) of the party constitution.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) also monitored proceedings.
Judgment reviews
Central to deliberations was a review of the 2024 National Convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, and the controversies that followed, including litigation and INEC’s position.
The NEC cited the Supreme Court judgment in Abegunde vs. Ondo State House of Assembly & Ors. (2025) LPELR-24588 (SC).
The judgment reaffirmed that leadership disputes within political parties are internal matters and not subject to judicial intervention.
The court emphasized that party members are bound by their constitution and internal dispute resolution mechanisms.
Consequently, the NEC reaffirmed the legitimacy of officers elected at the March 27, 2024, convention in Anambra State.
These include:
- National Chairman Barrister Julius Abure,
- Deputy National Chairmen — Clement Ojukwu, Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, and, Esther Gulmu,
- National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim and,
- key executives such as National Treasurer Mrs. Ngozi Doga, National Publicity Secretary Mr. Obiora Ifoh, and National Youth Leader Prince Kennedy Ahanotu.
In addition, vacant positions within the NWC were filled.
Oluwafemi Abayomi Arabambi was appointed National Vice Chairman (South West).
Prince Favour Reuben was appointed Assistant National Organizing Secretary, while Barrister Enu Kikawa was appointed Assistant National Woman Leader (South South).
The NEC further mandated the National Chairman and National Secretary to convene a Special Convention if deemed necessary.
It also ratified plans to conduct ward, local government, and state congresses across the federation, signaling a renewed push to consolidate grassroots structures.
Abure leads
National Chairman Barrister Julius Abure and National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim endorsed the resolutions.
Abure stressing that the decisions reflect the party’s commitment to internal democracy, stability, and adherence to constitutional provisions.
The NEC’s reaffirmation of leadership and ratification of congresses is expected to strengthen the Labour Party’s organizational base ahead of future political engagements.
Meanwhile, it will also reinforce the principle that party affairs remain the prerogative of its members and institutions.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Team that monitored the process was led by Rakiya Dattijo from the Election and Party Monitoring (EPM) department.
