Umuahia, Abia State — In a move that has sparked excitement among National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members nationwide, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved a new allowance structure that significantly boosts the earnings of corps members serving in the state.

The governor, known for his reform-driven leadership, directed officials yesterday to remove administrative bottlenecks and begin immediate implementation of the payments, which had faced delays.

Breakdown of the New Allowance

Under the new structure:

  • All corps members serving in Abia State will receive a ₦20,000 monthly state allowance.
  • Corps members posted to Abia State Government establishments will earn an extra ₦10,000, bringing their total state allowance to ₦30,000.
  • Teaching and medical corps members will receive an additional ₦30,000, raising their state allowance to ₦50,000.

This is in addition to the federal NYSC allowance of ₦77,000. The combined figures mean:

  • A regular corps member in Abia could earn about ₦97,000 per month (₦77,000 federal + ₦20,000 state).
  • Teaching and medical corps members could earn about ₦127,000 per month (₦77,000 federal + ₦50,000 state).

Corps Members React

The announcement has been met with jubilation among corps members, many of whom see Abia State as the most attractive posting in the country.

Social media platforms have been flooded with comments suggesting that “every NYSC corps member will now be lobbying to serve in Abia State.”

For years, corps members have complained about inadequate stipends that barely cover living expenses.

Governor Otti’s initiative is being hailed as a bold step toward improving welfare and motivating young graduates during their service year.

Wider Implications

Observers note that the policy could set a precedent for other states to follow, especially in addressing the financial struggles of corps members.

Analysts also point out that the move reflects Otti’s broader governance philosophy of “doing big things with little resources.”

By prioritizing corps members — particularly teachers and medical professionals — the governor is not only easing financial burdens.

Rather, he is also incentivizing service in critical sectors that directly impact education and healthcare in Abia State.

Governor Alex Otti’s approval of the new NYSC allowance structure has positioned Abia State as the most desirable posting for corps members in Nigeria.

With implementation now underway, the policy is expected to boost morale, attract talent, and reinforce the state’s reputation for progressive governance.
