TD WASHINGTON, D.C. — American filmmaker and Africa Arise founder Mike Arnold has launched a scathing attack on the leadership of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) and Washington lobbyist Elias Gerasoulis, accusing them of exploiting the Biafra cause for political influence and financial gain in the United States.

In a lengthy exposé titled “The Photo-Op Minister,” Arnold alleged that two men — Ogechukwu Nkere, whom he identifies as Isaiah Harrison Anyaogu, and Gerasoulis — have been promoting themselves in Washington as representatives of the Biafran cause without possessing legitimate authority to speak for the wider Biafran population.

Arnold stressed that his criticism was not directed at the Biafran cause itself.

“Biafra is real. The grievance is real. The 1967-70 slaughter is real. Millions of Biafrans have a legitimate claim to be heard,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, he accused the men of turning the historical grievances and suffering of Biafrans into what he described as a political and lobbying enterprise.

Dispute over BRGIE leadership

Arnold’s allegations centre heavily on the legitimacy of Nkere’s claim to be Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile.

He alleges that Nkere was removed from the organisation’s governing council in July 2025 following accusations of unauthorised alterations to Maryland registration documents.

According to Arnold, Nkere subsequently established a near-identical website and continued presenting himself as the group’s acting prime minister.

Arnold also questioned the circumstances surrounding Nkere’s reported selection as prime minister in January 2026, claiming that the alleged 50-0 vote has never been accompanied by a publicly verifiable list of those who participated.

These claims have not been independently established in the material provided by Arnold and should therefore be regarded as allegations.

Questions over finances

A major part of Arnold’s criticism concerns the finances of the organisation.

He claims that the group’s U.S.-registered nonprofit reported revenue of approximately $650,000 in a recent year, while showing no assets in the filing he examined.

Arnold also referenced reporting by HumAngle and the Institute for War and Peace Reporting concerning BRGIE fundraising activities.

He alleged that approximately $109,000 was raised from donors in 43 countries during fundraising sessions in 2024.

He further questioned an alleged BRGIE “IOU” programme under which supporters lend money with a promise of repayment with 100% interest after Biafra’s independence.

Arnold asked where the organisation’s money was going and challenged its leadership to demonstrate measurable benefits to Biafrans.

Lobbyist accused of selling access

Arnold’s criticism also targets Washington-based lobbyist Elias Gerasoulis, whom he describes as a registered foreign agent.

He claims Gerasoulis has represented or worked with organisations associated with separatist movements, including the Biafra and Ambazonia causes.

Arnold argues that the lobbyist’s activities have produced more photographs, meetings and press releases than tangible changes in U.S. policy.

He particularly questioned BRGIE claims concerning congressional engagement.

He alleged that what was described as a “historic Congressional Briefing” was actually an event held in a congressional office building rather than a formal congressional hearing or committee proceeding.

Arnold also alleges that Gerasoulis’ firm, Washington & Madison, receives approximately $66,000 monthly for its work with Nkere’s organisation.

Those financial and lobbying claims should be independently checked against U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act records and relevant nonprofit filings before being treated as established fact.

Personal dispute escalates

Arnold said his dispute with Nkere’s camp became personal after he met the group during a visit to Washington.

He recalled attending a congressional briefing where Nkere appeared among people taking photographs with him.

Arnold later met Nkere and Gerasoulis over lunch, accompanied by his producer Jeff Gibbs.

According to Arnold, the conversation focused largely on a message he says Nkere wanted conveyed to detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu — that Kanu should submit to Nkere’s leadership if released.

Arnold subsequently questioned publicly what had actually been accomplished during the Washington engagements.

He says that criticism was followed by an online campaign against him involving numerous accounts that he believes were coordinated.

“Where is the money going?”

Arnold portrayed the controversy as part of a wider struggle over who has the legitimate right to represent the Biafran cause internationally.

He contrasted what he described as his own years of work with displaced Nigerians and victims of violence with what he characterised as the Washington group’s emphasis on lobbying, meetings and publicity.

“The cause is real. The suffering is real,” Arnold concluded. “What’s fake is the man claiming to represent it — and the lobbyist pocketing a reported $66,000 a month to help him do it.”

The allegations contained in Arnold’s exposé have not, however, been independently adjudicated. The individuals and organisations criticised in the article would need to respond to the specific claims concerning their leadership, finances, lobbying contracts and activities for a complete account to emerge.

At the heart of the dispute is a broader question: who legitimately speaks for Biafrans in Washington, and whether international lobbying efforts are producing concrete political results for the people whose cause they claim to represent.
