TDThe highly anticipated release of media entrepreneur Linda Ikeji’s new film, The Night of June 7th, has been suspended following a directive from the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB).

The movie was scheduled to open in cinemas across Nigeria on Friday, August 28, 2026.

However it has been referred to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further review and advice because of the sensitive nature of the real-life events on which the story is based.

The development has generated significant attention in Nollywood and among Nigerians who have followed the story of the Apo Six killings for more than two decades.

Linda Ikeji confirmed the suspension in a statement shared on her platform.

She explained that the film’s release had been placed on hold while the production team continues to cooperate with the NFVCB and DSS.

The distributor, Nile Entertainment, also confirmed that the film’s nationwide theatrical release, distribution and public exhibition had been suspended pending the outcome of the regulatory review.

Why was The Night of June 7th suspended?

The major issue surrounding the film is its subject matter.

The Night of June 7th is based on the 2005 killing of six young Nigerians in Abuja, an incident that became widely known as the Apo Six killings.

The case remains one of Nigeria’s most controversial incidents involving alleged extrajudicial killings.

It has continued to attract public interest because of questions surrounding what happened to the victims and the subsequent legal proceedings.

According to reports, the six young Nigerians — Ifeanyi Ozo, Chinedu Meniru, Isaac Ekene, Paulinus Ogbonna, Anthony Nwokike and Augustina Arebun — were killed by police officers in Abuja after reportedly leaving a nightclub.

The incident generated widespread outrage and eventually resulted in the prosecution of police officers connected to the case.

Because the film revisits such a sensitive and historically significant incident, the NFVCB referred it to the DSS for further review before a final decision on its public exhibition can be made.

Linda Ikeji reacts to the development

Linda Ikeji has maintained that she and her team are cooperating with the relevant authorities throughout the review process.

In her reaction, the media entrepreneur acknowledged the sensitive nature of the story while making it clear that she remains committed to telling Nigerian stories.

The film’s suspension means audiences will have to wait until the regulatory process is concluded before they can see the movie in cinemas.

For Ikeji, the project represents a major return to theatrical filmmaking, with the producer choosing to tell a story connected to one of the most painful and controversial chapters in Nigeria’s recent history.

The filmmaker’s decision to bring the Apo Six story to the big screen had already generated considerable interest before the suspension.

Nile Entertainment confirms new release date will be announced

Nile Entertainment, the distributor of The Night of June 7th, said it would comply fully with the regulatory directive.

The company explained that the NFVCB had reviewed the film before referring it to the DSS for further review and advice.

The distributor said a new release date would be announced once the necessary regulatory clearance has been obtained.

However, the company has not disclosed how long the review process is expected to take.

For now, the film will not be available for cinema exhibition or public distribution.

Nile Entertainment also thanked audiences, exhibitors, partners and members of the media for their patience and support while the process continues.

What is The Night of June 7th about?

The film revisits the events surrounding the 2005 Apo Six killings.

The case involved six young Nigerians who were killed by police officers in Abuja.

Their deaths caused nationwide outrage and raised serious questions about police accountability and the treatment of civilians.

The legal proceedings that followed became another major part of the story.

Several police officers faced trial in connection with the killings.

In 2017, an FCT High Court convicted Ezekiel Acheneje and Baba Emmanuel of culpable homicide and sentenced them to death.

Three other officers, including then Deputy Commissioner of Police Danjuma Ibrahim, were discharged and acquitted for lack of sufficient evidence, while another accused officer remained at large.

The case has remained relevant in discussions about justice, police accountability and alleged extrajudicial killings in Nigeria.

By turning the events into a feature film, The Night of June 7th seeks to bring the story to a new generation of Nigerians through cinema.

A notable Nollywood cast

The film was written and produced by Linda Ikeji and directed by filmmaker Toka McBaror.

It features a notable cast that includes Gideon Okeke, Femi Branch, Ali Nuhu and Charles Lenny, among other actors.

The involvement of established Nollywood performers has contributed to the anticipation surrounding the project.

Before the suspension, the film had been positioned as one of the notable Nigerian cinema releases for August 2026.

Its subject matter also distinguished it from many conventional commercial Nollywood productions, as it deals directly with a real-life case that continues to provoke strong emotions and questions.

Why the suspension has generated controversy

The decision to halt the film’s release has triggered discussions across social media and within entertainment circles.

Some Nigerians have questioned why a film based on an event that happened more than two decades ago requires additional security review before its release.

Others believe that because the story concerns alleged police killings and involves real people and institutions, regulators are justified in examining the production carefully before allowing it to reach a nationwide audience.

The debate has placed both the film and its subject matter back in the public spotlight.

For Linda Ikeji and the production team, the immediate priority remains securing the necessary regulatory clearance.

What happens next?

For now, The Night of June 7th remains on hold.

The film’s producers and distributors are expected to continue working with the NFVCB and DSS while the review continues.

A new cinema release date will only be announced after the necessary approvals have been obtained.

The suspension has therefore created even more anticipation around the movie.

Many Nigerians are now waiting to see whether it will eventually receive clearance and what changes, if any, may be required before its theatrical release.

For a film based on one of Nigeria’s most controversial real-life cases, the latest development has ensured that The Night of June 7th remains one of the most talked-about Nollywood projects of 2026.

Until the regulators reach their decision, audiences will have to wait to see Linda Ikeji’s cinematic retelling of the story of the Apo Six.
