Historical Context
The sit-at-home exercise commemorates the day General Ojukwu declared the Republic of Biafra, sparking a civil war that lasted until 1970.
Despite the war’s end and the reintegration of the region into Nigeria, the memory of Biafra remains deeply embedded in the consciousness of many in the southeast.
MASSOB, founded in 1999, has consistently advocated for Biafran self-determination through non-violent means.
It distinguished itself from other separatist groups by emphasizing peaceful activism.
