TD The United States has released an updated list containing the names and photographs of 124 Nigerian nationals identified for deportation over criminal convictions.
The development was part of what American authorities described as an intensified immigration enforcement campaign.
According to reports, the individuals were placed on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) “worst-of-the-worst” criminal register.
The register is a database used to identify foreign nationals convicted of serious offences and subject to removal from the United States.
The publication of the list forms part of the Donald Trump administration’s broader crackdown on illegal immigration and foreign nationals convicted of crimes in the United States.
While the names and photographs of those listed have been made public, U.S. authorities have not disclosed a timetable for their deportation.
They have not also provided detailed information on the specific offences committed by each individual.
Earlier in the year, U.S. immigration authorities had announced plans to deport 79 Nigerians with criminal records.
The latest update expands the number to 124, reflecting continued immigration enforcement efforts targeting convicted foreign nationals.
Reports indicate that those on the list were convicted of various offences, including:
- fraud,
- illegal possession of firearms,
- drug-related crimes,
- assault, and,
- other criminal violations under U.S. law.
The latest development is expected to attract attention in Nigeria, particularly regarding the reintegration of deportees and the implications for bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States.
However, neither the Nigerian government nor the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) had issued an official response at the time of filing this report.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says it is publicizing information on foreign nationals arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
It described them as the “worst of the worst” criminal offenders.
According to the agency, the initiative is part of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement campaign.
The administration prioritizes the arrest and deportation of undocumented immigrants with serious criminal records.
The complete list, including the names and photographs of the affected Nigerians, has been published by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and has since been reproduced by several media organisations.
