TD KADUNA, Kaduna State — The Southern Kaduna Lawyers’ Forum (SKLF) has issued a strongly worded press statement demanding an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the mysterious death of Miss Mary Habila.

The young health practitioner reportedly died on June 27, 2026, at the residence of Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The Forum said it received the news “with deep shock and profound sadness,” extending condolences to the family of Tanko Habila Wisdom.

It described the circumstances of Mary’s death as “murky, unclear and questionable”.

It also stressed that no family should have to bury a daughter under such suspicious conditions.

Call for Investigation

The SKLF emphasized that conflicting reports surrounding the incident demand clarity.

It urged law enforcement and security agencies to conduct a valid autopsy and coroner’s inquest before any burial takes place.

It further warned that a rushed funeral could deepen public suspicion and mistrust.

The Forum listed critical questions requiring answers, including:

  • Why was Mary at Umahi’s residence?

  • Who was present in the house at the time of her death?

  • What was the state of her body when discovered?

  • Was her death on June 27 concealed until July 10?

  • What were the circumstances of her employment and possible secondment to Umahi’s household?

  • Was she a nurse or physiotherapist, and under what terms did she travel to Ebonyi State?

Rule of Law and Accountability

Citing Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution, SKLF stressed that “no person, regardless of status, position, or affiliation, is above the law.”

It vowed to monitor proceedings and provide legal services to ensure justice is not only done but seen to be done.

The Forum also urged the media and public to avoid speculation and respect the dignity of the deceased and her grieving family while investigations proceed.

Justice and Next Steps

SKLF Chairman, Dr. Solomon Musa, and Publicity Secretary, Solomon G. Yohanna, who signed the statement, said the Forum is considering initiating legal proceedings if authorities fail to act diligently.

“The sanctity of human life is non-negotiable,” the statement read.

It added that SKLF expects swift action to assuage public outcry and guarantee the family’s right to truth and justice.

Mary Habila’s death has sparked widespread concern across Nigeri.

Civil society groups, activists, and ordinary citizens demanding transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.

For many, the incident underscores the urgent need for stronger safeguards to protect vulnerable citizens and ensure that justice is upheld without fear or favour.
