TDFormer presidential candidate Peter Obi has lauded the successful conduct of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention.
Obi described it as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, while calling for urgent action to address the country’s mounting challenges.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi said the convention was held against what he termed “significant odds”.
He said it demonstrated the resilience of democratic institutions and the determination of party stakeholders to uphold political processes.
He commended the leadership of the party under David Mark, noting that the chairman’s “calm and steady guidance” played a crucial role in steering the party through a critical period.
Obi also praised the efforts of the convention organising committee led by Liyel Imoke, citing their diligence and attention to detail in ensuring the event’s success.
According to him, the seamless execution of the convention reflected a high level of commitment and coordination among party leaders and members.
The former Anambra State governor extended his appreciation to delegates, party faithful, volunteers, and supporters across Nigeria and in the diaspora, acknowledging their role in sustaining democratic values.
He emphasized that their participation underscored a broader national commitment to preserving democracy despite prevailing challenges.
Highlighting the significance of public support, Obi thanked Nigerians for their resilience and continued belief in democratic governance.
He noted that such collective determination remains stronger than forces that seek to undermine the system.
He added that the success of the convention should serve as a rallying point for broader national engagement.
However, Obi cautioned against complacency, urging party members and political leaders to transition swiftly from celebration to governance-focused responsibility.
He outlined pressing national concerns, including economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and widespread uncertainty, stressing that these issues require urgent and decisive intervention.
“The success of this convention must not end as an event,” Obi stated.
He emphasized the need for it to translate into actionable strategies aimed at nation-building.
He called for practical solutions, stronger institutions, and renewed efforts to restore hope among Nigerians.
Obi further stressed that unity, sacrifice, and integrity would be essential in navigating the country’s current challenges.
He urged political actors to prioritize national interest above personal ambitions and partisan considerations, warning that divisions could hinder progress.
Reiterating his long-standing message, Obi expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, asserting that with sustained commitment and collective effort, meaningful transformation is achievable.
“A new Nigeria is possible,” he concluded, reinforcing a slogan that has become central to his political philosophy.
The ADC convention comes at a time of heightened political activity in Nigeria, with parties repositioning ahead of future electoral contests while grappling with internal and external pressures.
