TD Lagos, Nigeria — Former Anambra State governor and 2027 presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi has publicly endorsed the ongoing Dangote Petroleum Refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Mr. Obi described it as a landmark opportunity for Nigerians at home and abroad to participate directly in the country’s economic growth.

Africa’s Largest IPO

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery IPO, launched on September 14, 2026, is Africa’s largest to date, targeting a potential raise of ₦2.15 trillion.

The offering includes 4.1 billion new ordinary shares priced at ₦525 each, with a minimum subscription of just ₦5,250 (10 shares), making it highly accessible to retail investors.

The IPO is structured as a “people’s IPO,” deliberately designed to democratize ownership of one of Nigeria’s most strategic industrial assets.

Obi’s Endorsement

In a statement shared on his official X account, Obi praised Aliko Dangote’s multi-sector investments in production and industry.

He aligned them with his longstanding advocacy for shifting Nigeria’s economy from consumption to production.

“I remain very proud of the commitment and breakthrough of Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s investment in the real sector of our country’s economy, across different sectors.

“This validates my position that we should move Nigeria from consumption to production,” Obi wrote.

He encouraged Nigerians to buy shares in the IPO and urged other businesses to follow Dangote’s example by conducting public offerings, thereby enabling citizens to own stakes in key industries.

Dangote Refinery: Strategic National Asset

The refinery, located near Lagos in a Free Trade Zone, was built at a reported cost of $20 billion and began operations in 2024.

By early 2026, it reached full design capacity of 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), supplying gasoline domestically while exporting diesel and jet fuel regionally and to Europe.

Proceeds from the IPO will support a $14.3 billion expansion project to double refining capacity to 1.4 million bpd by 2029, positioning the refinery among the world’s largest single-train facilities.

Recent financials show a dramatic turnaround: H1 2026 revenue exceeded $13 billion, with profit after tax of $1.82 billion, reversing a $476 million loss in 2025.

Market Reception

Early demand for the IPO has been strong, with reports of billions of naira in subscriptions within hours of launch.

Some digital platforms experienced temporary outages due to high traffic, raising expectations of oversubscription.

Analysts note that while the valuation is ambitious—implying a market capitalization of ₦63–65 trillion ($47–49 billion)—the refinery’s profitability and expansion plans provide significant growth potential.

Obi’s Call for Broader Participation

Obi’s endorsement reflects his broader economic philosophy: encouraging Nigerians to invest in productive sectors and re-industrialize the economy.

“I encourage other Nigerian businesses to invest in the productive sectors of the Nigerian economy and also give fellow Nigerian citizens the opportunity to be part of the re-industrialization of the country by offering their shares to the public through public offerings,” he stated.

His remarks highlight the potential of IPOs to democratize wealth creation, allowing ordinary Nigerians to share in the success of major enterprises.

Risks and Considerations

While enthusiasm is high, analysts caution that investing in refining carries risks:

  • Execution risk on the massive capacity expansion.
  • Oil price volatility and geopolitical factors.
  • Foreign exchange exposure and potential changes to Free Trade Zone tax benefits.
  • Concentration of ownership, with Dangote Group retaining a dominant stake.

Nonetheless, the IPO is widely seen as a landmark event for Nigeria’s capital markets and a step toward greater public participation in industrial growth.

Conclusion

Peter Obi’s endorsement of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery IPO underscores the symbolic importance of the offering: it is not just a financial transaction, but a statement about Nigeria’s economic future.

By encouraging Nigerians to invest, Obi has tied the IPO to his broader vision of moving the country from consumption to production, re-industrializing the economy, and empowering citizens to own a stake in national progress.

The Dangote IPO closes on October 13, 2026, with trading on the Nigerian Exchange expected later this year.
