TDProminent Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain and aspirant, Obunike Ohaegbu, has dismissed as “wicked and baseless” rumours suggesting that the party has zoned the Nnewi South House of Representatives ticket to Ekwusigo Local Government Area.
Speaking in an interview with This Dawn News, Ohaegbu insisted that the NDC, a party he described as “built on equity, justice, and fair play,” would never succumb to such a blunder.
He maintained that the rumour was being spread by political opponents who view the NDC as a growing threat to their dominance.
“I am a member of the NDC, and our party has not even started selling forms.
“No such decision has been taken.
“This rumour must be coming from opposition elements who want to destabilize the NDC,” Ohaegbu said.
Equity and Representation
Ohaegbu explained that the federal constituency comprises three local governments—Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo.
He, therefore, cautioned against any attempt to marginalize the larger voting blocs.
He noted that Nnewi South alone has over 20,000 registered voters, while Nnewi North has even more, compared to Ekwusigo’s smaller voting strength.
“You cannot concede both the senatorial and House of Representatives positions to Ekwusigo.
“That would be inequitable and unjust. NDC cannot make such a mistake,” he stressed.

Opposition Panic
The aspirant alleged that the rumour was being fueled by officials of the ruling APC-led federal government, who are unsettled by NDC’s rising influence.
He pointed to the party’s firm stance that the presidency must return to the South for the next four years as evidence of its commitment to fairness.
“They are panic-butting, spreading all kinds of rumours because NDC has shown capacity and is insisting on equity.
“This is nothing but an attempt to distract us,” he said.
Southeast–North Partnership
Ohaegbu also highlighted the strategic partnership between the Southeast and the North, which he said was championed by NDC leaders including Peter Obi.
He explained that the move was designed to build a broad coalition capable of challenging entrenched political interests.
“We have always insisted that the Southeast must partner with the North.
“Mr. Obi has successfully done that by aligning with one of the strongest organic support bases in the North.
“That is the kind of politics NDC represents,” Ohaegbu noted.
Call for Calm
Ohaegbu urged his supporters to remain calm and disregard the rumours.
He assured them that the NDC has not made any zoning decisions regarding the House of Representatives ticket.
“Our party is built on equity and justice. No such concession has been made.
“I call on my supporters to continue registering en masse with the NDC. We will not be distracted,” he concluded.
His statement underscores the growing tension within the Nnewi political landscape as the 2027 elections approach, with zoning and representation emerging as key issues.
