TDThe Nigeria Democratic Congress Polling Units Support Group (NDCPUSG) has warned against the dangers of “weaponized ignorance” and calling for stronger protection of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and electoral integrity.
The civic organization, which mobilizes volunteers to promote transparency at polling units nationwide, emphasized that misinformation and manipulation of public discourse pose grave threats to democracy.
Key Highlights from the Briefing
- Weaponized Ignorance: NDCPUSG described the deliberate spread of misinformation as a tool used to erode civic understanding and weaken accountability.
The group stressed that an informed citizenry is the strongest defense against democratic decline.
- Democratic Institutions: The statement underscored the importance of safeguarding the independence of the executive, legislature, judiciary, electoral bodies, security agencies, and the media.
Public confidence in these institutions, it noted, is essential for constitutional governance.
- Electoral Integrity: The group reiterated that polling units form the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.
It pledged continued support for lawful observation, civic participation, peaceful conduct, and protection of every valid vote under Nigeria’s Constitution and electoral laws.
- National Unity: NDCPUSG urged Nigerians to rise above divisions of ideology, ethnicity, religion, or region.
It stressed that political competition must never undermine national cohesion.
Statement from the Convener
Prince Crispus Amarabhi Owoh Jnr, National Convener of NDCPUSG, signed the briefing, declaring:
“Our future depends upon institutions that command public confidence, citizens who remain informed, and elections that reflect the genuine will of the people.
“Democracies endure not merely because constitutions exist, but because citizens choose to defend democratic values through lawful participation and respect for the rule of law.”
Reactions and Context
The briefing has drawn attention on civic platforms and social media, with commentators noting its timeliness ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
Analysts say the emphasis on misinformation reflects growing concerns about the impact of propaganda and disinformation on Nigeria’s political stability.
NDCPUSG concluded by urging all stakeholders — government, civil society, legal practitioners, media, and international partners — to remain vigilant in defending Nigeria’s democratic values and institutions.
