TD A United States federal judge has given U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro four additional days to comply with a court directive concerning the release of records held by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) relating to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell reportedly set August 21, 2026, as the new deadline after Pirro sought a 10-day extension to comply with the court’s directive.

The judge granted only part of the requested extension, effectively giving the U.S. government four additional days.

Judge Rejects Full 10-Day Extension

The development represents the latest turn in a long-running Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) dispute over records connected to U.S. investigations involving Tinubu.

Reports on the latest ruling indicate that Judge Howell took into consideration the length of time the case has remained before the court.

The matter has reportedly been pending for more than three years.

Pirro, who was appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia during Donald Trump’s administration, had asked for additional time to comply with the order.

Rather than granting the full 10 days requested, Howell reportedly ordered the government to act by August 21.

The records reportedly include materials from the FBI, DEA and DOJ relating to investigations and allegations concerning drug trafficking and financial activities associated with Tinubu.

However, the existence of investigative records or a court order directing their release does not establish that Tinubu committed a drug-trafficking offence.

Tinubu has not been criminally convicted of drug trafficking in the United States.

Development Comes Amid Tinubu’s Attempt to Delay Release

The latest development comes shortly after reports that Tinubu became involved in the legal effort seeking additional time before the records are released.

In a separate development reported by This Dawn News, Tinubu joined a legal action seeking a 10-day extension for the release of the FBI, DEA and DOJ records.

That development has intensified public interest in the case, particularly because the records concern allegations and investigations dating back several decades.

The latest court decision now places the U.S. government under a significantly tighter deadline.

Pirro Had Previously Moved to Release Records

The latest proceedings also follow a move by Pirro’s office toward complying with the court’s directive.

This Dawn News previously reported that the Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney had initiated action aimed at facilitating the release of the DOJ, FBI and DEA records.

The current dispute therefore involves competing pressures: compliance with a federal court order on one hand and requests for additional time to process and release the records on the other.

Background to the Records

The controversy is connected to U.S. investigations from the 1990s involving financial accounts associated with Tinubu.

U.S. court records from that period show that approximately $460,000 connected to accounts associated with Tinubu was forfeited to the U.S. government in a civil forfeiture proceeding.

The forfeiture proceedings involved allegations that the funds represented proceeds of narcotics trafficking or were connected to transactions prohibited under federal money-laundering laws.

Tinubu’s representatives have consistently emphasized that the forfeiture proceeding was a civil action against money and not a criminal prosecution resulting in a conviction against him personally.

The distinction remains important because the current FOIA litigation concerns the disclosure of government records.

It is not, by itself, a judicial finding that Tinubu committed a drug-trafficking offence.

Records Could Renew Political Debate in Nigeria

The anticipated release has nevertheless generated considerable political interest in Nigeria, particularly as the country moves toward the 2027 general election.

Supporters of Tinubu have argued that previous legal proceedings and public explanations have addressed the allegations.

Critics, meanwhile, have demanded the release of the underlying U.S. government records.

They argue that Nigerians should have access to information held by American law-enforcement agencies.

The latest order could bring the dispute closer to a decisive disclosure.

With August 21 now set as the new deadline, attention will turn to whether the DOJ, FBI and DEA will release the requested records.

Attention also centers on whether they will seek further judicial relief or provide another explanation for any material that cannot immediately be disclosed.

For now, the court’s decision represents a setback for the government’s request for additional time and a significant development in the long-running effort to obtain the Tinubu-related records.
