TDThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially registered the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party, expanding the country’s multi-party system just months before the build-up to the 2027 general elections.

The registration, announced around 5 February 2026 alongside that of the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), came after years of legal hurdles.

The NDC first applied to INEC in 2017 but secured final approval through a Federal High Court order directing the commission to list the party.

INEC complied with the directive, presenting the official registration certificate to the party later in February.

Leadership Structure Takes Shape

The NDC has moved quickly to establish its national leadership, with officers serving in a pro-tem capacity pending ratification at the party’s maiden National Convention.

According to INEC records and party statements, the key national officers are:

  1. National Chairman: Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe
  2. National Secretary: Barr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu
  3. National Treasurer: Mr. John Odey
  4. National Financial Secretary: Hon. Mainasara Abubakar Sani
  5. National Legal Adviser: Barr. Reuben Egwuaba (who received the INEC certificate on the party’s behalf)

The party has also appointed National Vice Chairmen across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to ensure broad representation: Mohammed Bakin Zuwo (North West), Dr. Danlami Arabs (North East), Chief Barnabas Ejisi (North Central), Barr. Frederick Owotorufa (South South), Chief Teddy Obey (South East), and Pastor Dr. Mrs. Adedayo Ekong (South West). Pro-tem State Chairmen have been named nationwide to drive grassroots mobilisation.93

Party officials described the appointments as deliberate steps toward building an inclusive, nationally focused organisation.

Early Activities and 2027 Ambitions

Since registration, the NDC has hit the ground running.

The party has launched a digital membership registration drive, appointed state structures, and notified INEC of its timetable for internal activities.

It commenced nationwide congresses on 1 May 2026, leading to its first National Convention scheduled for 9 May 2026 in Abuja.

The convention is expected to formalise leadership positions, ratify the party constitution, and chart a clear path toward fielding candidates in the 2027 polls.

Primaries are tentatively set to begin later in May.

Structures and Commitments

In a statement, party leaders expressed confidence in their structures and commitment to democratic competition.

“Today’s event marks the culmination of NDC’s long and tortuous fight for registration,” Barr. Reuben Egwuaba remarked during the certificate presentation.

The emergence of the NDC adds to the growing list of political parties seeking to challenge the dominance of Nigeria’s major parties.

Analysts say its success will depend on how effectively it translates early organisational momentum into broad-based membership and viable candidates.

As the political landscape evolves ahead of 2027, all eyes will be on whether the Nigeria Democratic Congress can carve out a distinct identity and attract significant support across the country.
