THIS DAWN — The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday descended into a rowdy session during the screening of social commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, nominated by President Bola Tinubu for a federal appointment.
The session, which was expected to proceed routinely, quickly turned contentious.
The lawmakers traded accusations, procedural objections, and political jabs over Omokri’s suitability for the role.
Tension reportedly began moments after Omokri entered the chamber.
Several senators from the opposition raised objections.
They cited past statements and online activism they described as “divisive,” “unpatriotic,” and “inconsistent with the values of public service.”
They argued that Omokri’s nomination required deeper scrutiny, especially given his history of sharp criticism directed at political leaders across party lines.
Senators aligned with the ruling party, however, dismissed the objections as politically motivated.
They praised Omokri’s advocacy work on human rights, humanitarian interventions, and his role as a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
Attempts by Senate leadership to restore order were repeatedly drowned out by shouts from both camps.
More uproar
The uproar escalated when an opposition senator moved a motion to suspend the screening pending an ethics review of Omokri’s social-media activities.
The motion triggered a loud protest from pro-Omokri lawmakers, who accused the opposition of attempting to “weaponize personal opinions” to block a presidential nominee.
For nearly 20 minutes, the Senate floor was engulfed in arguments, with some lawmakers banging their desks and others shouting across the aisle.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio had to call for calm multiple times, warning that the chamber’s conduct was “drifting into embarrassing territory.”
He eventually ordered a brief closed-door meeting in an effort to de-escalate tensions.
After the recess, the Senate reconvened but remained divided.
While Omokri proceeded with part of his presentation, several lawmakers continued to grumble openly, and others staged a symbolic walkout to register their protest.
As of press time, the Senate had not reached a final decision on Omokri’s confirmation, and deliberations were expected to continue later in the week.
The incident adds to growing political tensions in the National Assembly, where several recent nominations have sparked heated exchanges reflecting Nigeria’s increasingly polarized political climate.
