TD The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a final call for documentation from nationals seeking evacuation from South Africa, as xenophobic protests and violent attacks against migrants continue to escalate.

The announcement was made by Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who emphasized the urgency of the situation and the need for Nigerians at risk to take advantage of government-sponsored chartered flights.

Nigeria’s concern has deepened following the tragic deaths of two citizens, Musa Yunana Joe and Charles Iroegbu, during the unrest.

The government has demanded that South African authorities urgently investigate the incidents and bring those responsible to justice.

Officials stressed that the safety of Nigerians abroad remains a top priority.

They reiterated that the evacuation program is designed to protect lives amid worsening conditions.

Previous Evacuations

Since the outbreak of violence, the Federal Government has organized three separate evacuation operations.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended the program beyond its initial June 30 deadline, allowing more citizens to return home.

The fourth evacuation flight successfully arrived in Nigeria on July 3, 2026, carrying hundreds of returnees.

Authorities confirmed that another flight is scheduled to depart Johannesburg on Tuesday, July 7.

Meanwhile, the final evacuation flight is expected to leave South Africa on July 10.

Need for Urgency

Nigerians still weighing the risks of remaining in South Africa have been urged to act swiftly.

“Properties and investments lost can be replaced, but not lives lost,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu cautioned, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The government has advised citizens to complete all necessary documentation to secure seats on the flights.

It stressed that the aircrafts have been made available at full capacity to accommodate as many evacuees as possible.

Officials warned that there are no signs of improvement in the security environment, making evacuation the safest option for those who feel endangered.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad, pledging to continue implementing measures to safeguard its citizens in times of crisis.

With the final evacuation flights imminent, officials hope that those still undecided will prioritize their safety and return home under the protection of the government.
