Fact Check: Viral LASTMA Fire Video Is From 2024

A viral LASTMA fire video shared in November 2026 closely matches a Mile 2 incident reported in 2024; claims about a new event remain unverified.

Noticias de This DawnA video posted on X on November 6, 2026, is being circulated with claims about a new confrontation involving Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials and bus passengers.

The accompanying account alleges that an official set passengers ablaze after a woman challenged officers over an alleged roadblock and extortion.

However, the scene described in the post closely matches a LASTMA-related fire incident documented in Lagos on November 5, 2024.

Contemporaneous reporting from the Foundation for Investigative Journalism described a yellow 14-passenger bus, arguing traffic officers, a sudden fire, and a man running onto the road.

That report also described a petrol tanker passing close to the fleeing man, details that resemble the footage description now circulating.

The match raises a serious concern that old footage is being presented with a new date and a different account.

The post itself could not be independently inspected during this review, so the identification is based on the close match to documented scene details.

What Was Reported About the 2024 LASTMA Incident

FIJ reported that the earlier confrontation occurred near Mile 2 in Lagos, involving a Volkswagen T4 commercial bus.

The report said the bus was yellow, parked on the road, and surrounded by traffic officers during an argument.

It described a fire suddenly erupting, with the driver also catching fire and running into the roadway.

According to FIJ, LASTMA’s then-public affairs director, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident and provided the agency’s account.

LASTMA said the driver had resisted arrest and set the vehicle and officers ablaze while attempting to evade arrest.

The agency reported that one officer sustained burns to a hand, while available reporting did not identify passenger casualties.

BusinessDay also reported in November 2024 that a commercial bus driver allegedly set a LASTMA officer on fire during an arrest attempt.

That coverage placed the confrontation in the Mile 2 area and said the driver allegedly used petrol.

The earlier reports therefore differ materially from the new caption’s claim that a LASTMA official set passengers ablaze.

Why the New Caption Needs Caution

The circulating description attributes the argument to a passenger challenging alleged obstruction and extortion by traffic officials.

The 2024 reports reviewed describe a dispute during an attempted traffic-related arrest, and do not mention that passenger-led sequence.

They also attribute ignition to the bus driver, according to LASTMA’s statement at the time, rather than to an officer.

Those reports are based on contemporaneous coverage and the agency’s account, not an independent forensic investigation of the fire’s cause.

The current X caption does not provide evidence showing that the footage depicts a separate event in 2026.

No independent 2026 report or official statement confirming a new fire involving LASTMA officers and passengers was located in this review.

Until the video’s origin is independently established, identifying it as a fresh incident or assigning blame would risk misleading viewers.

The claim that the officer ignited the fire should therefore remain unverified and should not be presented as established fact.

How LASTMA Responded in the Earlier Case

LASTMA’s 2024 account described the driver as resisting arrest and setting fire to the bus and officers.

That account was reported by media outlets at the time, including FIJ, BusinessDay and other Nigerian news organisations.

The reports said one officer received a burn injury, but the material reviewed does not establish that passengers were burned.

The agency’s account and the video do not replace a police investigation or a court’s determination of responsibility.

The older reports also do not verify the new caption’s assertion that officers were blocking the road to extort money.

Some coverage referenced complaints about extortion on Lagos roads as broader context, not as proven facts about the specific confrontation.

That distinction matters because reusing real footage with new claims can change who appears responsible and what viewers believe happened.

A reliable account should separate observable video details from allegations about the argument, the ignition source, and any injuries.

It should also state the incident date and identify whether details come from authorities, witnesses, or independent reporting.

What Remains Unconfirmed

The available evidence strongly suggests the clip description corresponds to the November 2024 Mile 2 incident, rather than a verified new event.

A direct frame-by-frame comparison with the video was not possible in this review, so the match remains based on reported details.

The post’s date alone does not establish when the footage was recorded, especially when older video is frequently recirculated.

No confirmed location, date, passenger identities, injury count or police account for a distinct 2026 occurrence was found.

The claim that an officer set passengers ablaze is unsupported by the sources reviewed and conflicts with the earlier agency account.

That earlier account accused the driver of igniting the fire, while reporting said an officer suffered a hand burn.

Neither version should be treated as a court-established conclusion without further investigation or reliable evidence.

Lagos authorities and LASTMA could clarify whether the video shows a new event or footage from the 2024 case.

The original uploader could also help by providing the recording’s date, location, source and any unedited footage.

Public Safety and Responsible Sharing

The video depicts a dangerous roadside fire near moving traffic, making accurate identification important for public understanding and safety.

People should avoid approaching burning vehicles or tankers, and should alert emergency responders rather than crowding an active scene.

LASTMA and Lagos emergency agencies have responded to multiple road fires, but each event requires its own verified account.

Sharing unverified allegations can wrongly accuse individuals, inflame tensions, and distract from the actual cause and investigation.

The strongest substantiated conclusion is that the video’s described details match a Lagos incident reported in November 2024.

The claim that it shows a new 2026 confrontation, or that a LASTMA officer ignited the fire, remains unverified.
