TD MIAMI, Florida — At least five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport, struck multiple vehicles and caught fire while landing on Sunday afternoon.
The incident involving Prime Air Flight 7598 occurred at about 2 p.m. local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and airport officials.
Amazon Cargo Plane Overruns Runway
The aircraft, operated by 21 Air, overran Miami International Airport’s diagonal runway and became disabled at the northwest end of the airport.
The FAA identified the aircraft as a Boeing 767-300 that had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
More Than 60 Fire Units Respond
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said more than 60 fire units responded to the crash involving multiple patients.
“Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught on fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing.
“Firefighters are working on extinguishing the fire and assessing patients,” the fire department said in a post on X.
Authorities had not immediately released further details about the identities of those killed or the extent of the injuries.
Amazon Confirms Incident
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that an Amazon Air aircraft operated by 21 Air experienced an “incident” while attempting to land at Miami International Airport.
“This is a fast-moving situation and we’re still gathering details.
“We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,” Amazon said.
“Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. We’re doing everything we can to support those affected.”
Emergency Call Received at 1:55 p.m.
County computer-aided dispatch records indicated that the emergency call was received at approximately 1:55 p.m.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said authorities were closely monitoring the situation and supporting first responders.
“Right now, our focus is on everyone involved and making sure our first responders have what they need.
“We will provide updates as we learn more,” she said in a post on X.
Miami Airport Placed Under Ground Stop after Amazon Cargo Place Crash
The crash prompted authorities to impose a full ground stop at Miami International Airport as emergency personnel responded to the scene.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said first responders were assessing the situation and warned travelers to expect significant disruptions.
“We’ve issued a full ground stop at Miami International while first responders assess the scene after an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway.
“If you’re traveling through the area, please expect significant delays and potential cancellations,” Duffy said in a post on X.
One Runway Reopens as FAA Investigates
Airport officials later announced that one runway had reopened but said the airport was still experiencing operational impacts from the incident.
Passengers scheduled to travel through Miami International Airport on Sunday were advised to check directly with their airlines for flight status updates before heading to the airport.
The FAA said it will investigate the incident.
