TD The Federation of Mbaise Media Professionals (FMMP) on Thursday, August 13, 2023, held a Pre-Iriji Mbaise event at Chris VI Hotel, Ahiara, where prominent sons and daughters of Mbaise were honoured for their contributions to the development of the society.
One of the major highlights of the event was the presentation of an award to the pioneer Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs in Imo State and current governorship aspirant, Dr. Ugorji Okechukwu Ugorji.
Consistent with his reputation for punctuality and commitment, Dr. Ugorji was among the first guests to arrive at the venue and was one of the last to leave.
The organisers recognised him for “Excellence in Public Administration,” describing the honour as a tribute to his pioneering and courageous service as Imo State’s first Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs.
Ugorji Appreciates FMMP
Responding to the citation and presentation of the award, Dr. Ugorji expressed his appreciation to the Federation of Mbaise Media Professionals for recognising his contributions to the security and development of Imo State.
He said he understood that the award was primarily in recognition of the service he rendered while serving as Commissioner responsible for homeland security.
“I want to thank my dear brothers and sisters for remembering the work we did and for recognising that work,” he said.
Dr. Ugorji subsequently dedicated the honour to the political leader who, according to him, provided him with the opportunity to serve the people of Imo State.
“An Odogwu named Hope brought me to the 3R Shared Prosperity Family and gave me the opportunity to serve.
“I dedicate this recognition to His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma, CON.”
Remembers Security Personnel Who Paid the Ultimate Price
Dr. Ugorji also used the occasion to pay tribute to the young men and women who contributed to security efforts across Imo State.
He particularly referenced those who lost their lives while serving and protecting their communities.
Ugorji stressed that their sacrifices must not be forgotten.
He noted that any account of the state’s security efforts must recognise those who paid the ultimate price in the course of protecting others.
‘I Am a Writer and Publisher’
Dr. Ugorji reflected on his public-service journey.
He recalled that his entry into government provided an opportunity to combine public service with his longstanding interests in writing and publishing.
“I am a writer and publisher. I write books and I publish books as well.
“So, I am among my kindred when I am with journalists.
“This is one of my primary constituencies and I have worked with virtually every journalist here,” he said.
He described the media as an important constituency and expressed his appreciation for the relationship he has maintained with journalists over the years.
Commends Young People’s Contributions
The former commissioner also spoke warmly about the young people with whom he worked.
He described them as important partners in advancing the programmes and initiatives undertaken in the state.
According to him, the involvement of young people was particularly important in communicating political and developmental programmes.
The involvement, as well, strengthening connections between government and local communities.
He noted that young people played significant roles in ensuring that government initiatives reached the people and that communities remained connected to the development process.
Award Represents Collective Effort
Dr. Ugorji expressed further appreciation to the organisers, guests and members of the Federation of Mbaise Media Professionals for the recognition.
He described the award as more than a personal honour.
He said it also represented recognition of the broader 3R Shared Prosperity team and the circumstances that created the opportunity for him to serve.
The event consequently served as a platform for celebrating individuals who have contributed to Mbaise and Imo State.
It also served as an occasion to reflect on public service, security, community development and the importance of recognising those who have contributed to the progress of society.
