TD A U.S.-based lobbying and public-affairs firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., has claimed that senior officials in Washington have expressed shock after being briefed on longstanding U.S. Department of Justice allegations concerning Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The firm said it had recently presented information relating to alleged drug-trafficking investigations involving Tinubu to officials connected to the White House and the U.S. Congress.

The allegations, which the firm says date back several decades, have previously been the subject of political controversy and public debate in Nigeria and the United States.

‘How Do We Even Handle Something Like This?’

In a statement published on social media, Von Batten-Montague-York said the reaction from some Washington officials had been particularly strong.

According to the firm, a senior staff member described as being close to President Donald Trump expressed disbelief after receiving a briefing on the allegations.

The firm quoted the official as asking: “How do we even handle something as fucked-up as this?”

The lobbying firm said the reaction illustrated what it considers to be a lack of awareness among current Washington policymakers about allegations dating from the 1980s and 1990s.

It argued that regular changes in the White House and Congress mean that many officials currently serving in Washington were not involved in government when the underlying investigations and allegations first emerged.

Lobby Firm Says It Briefed White House Security Officials

In another statement, Dr. Von Batten said he personally briefed senior leadership within the White House National Security Council.

The briefing, he said, was about what he described as U.S. Justice Department allegations involving President Tinubu.

He said the briefing included information contained in records held by U.S. law-enforcement agencies.

According to the firm, the records contain allegations that Tinubu was connected to a criminal organisation.

The organisation was involved in trafficking heroin from Nigeria through Illinois and into Indiana during the 1980s and 1990s.

The firm further claimed that it had raised concerns about the potential implications of the allegations for U.S. foreign policy and the reputation of the United States.

Claims About DOJ, FBI and DEA Records

Von Batten-Montague-York said records held by the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Drug Enforcement Administration contain allegations concerning Tinubu.

However, the statements by the lobbying firm do not, by themselves, establish that the allegations are proven facts.

The existence, contents and legal status of specific records, as well as the precise allegations contained in them are issues of controversy.

They require independent verification from official U.S. government documents or authenticated court records.

Tinubu has previously denied wrongdoing in connection with allegations concerning narcotics trafficking.

He has also denied that the U.S. civil forfeiture case involving funds were linked in any way to narcotics proceeds.

Firm Criticises Tinubu’s Engagement with Trump Administration

The lobbying firm also criticised Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic and political engagement with the Trump administration.

It alleged that Tinubu had sought to use legitimate discussions concerning U.S.-Nigeria relations as an avenue to secure a White House invitation, a meeting with President Trump and political endorsement.

The firm described such efforts as inappropriate in light of the allegations it says are contained in U.S. law-enforcement records.

It further argued that Washington should consider the implications of the allegations before extending high-level diplomatic engagements to the Nigerian president.

Allegations Remain Controversial

The latest claims come amid renewed political and legal scrutiny of Tinubu’s history in the United States.

The controversy has periodically resurfaced in Nigeria, particularly around election periods and debates concerning Tinubu’s eligibility, educational records and activities in the United States.

Critics have demanded greater transparency concerning U.S. records relating to the former Lagos State governor.

Meanwhile, Tinubu’s supporters have consistently rejected allegations of wrongdoing.

They maintained that attempts to use the issues against him are politically motivated.

The latest intervention by Von Batten-Montague-York is therefore likely to intensify the debate.

Washington Yet to Publicly Confirm Reaction

There was no independent confirmation in the material released by the lobbying firm that the White House or congressional leadership has formally adopted its characterization of the allegations.

Likewise, the firm has yet to publish a transcript, official response or record of the alleged briefing with White House or congressional officials.

Nevertheless, Von Batten-Montague-York says it intends to continue raising the matter with policymakers in Washington.

It argued that senior U.S. officials should be fully aware of the historical allegations before engaging Tinubu on matters involving the United States.

The development adds another layer to the longstanding controversy surrounding Tinubu’s activities in the United States.

It also scrutinises the extent to which historical U.S. law-enforcement records could influence perceptions of his presidency and Nigeria-U.S. relations.
