Warri, Delta State — The Delta State Government has indefinitely suspended the Commissioner for Works (Highway and Urban Roads), Izeze Reuben.

The suspension followed allegations linking him to the brutal assault of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, Simon “Temple” Mudi, during an APC leadership meeting in Effurun.

In a statement signed by Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Eze Emu, the administration said the suspension was necessary to allow security agencies conduct an impartial investigation.

The move underscores the seriousness with which the state government is treating the incident, which has sparked outrage both online and offline.

The Viral Video and Assault

The controversy erupted after a video surfaced showing Mudi being attacked by youths at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre in Warri.

Witnesses alleged that the assault followed remarks by Mudi praising President Bola Tinubu’s administration as “the best thing to happen to Nigerians.”

His comments reportedly angered some attendees, leading to a violent confrontation that left him injured.

Images shared online appeared to show Mudi receiving medical treatment.

The footage quickly went viral, drawing condemnation from citizens who described the attack as a dangerous sign of political intolerance.

Political Fallout and Public Debate

The incident has triggered heated debate across social media.

Supporters of Mudi have wished him a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, critics of the Tinubu administration argue that the attack reflects broader public frustration with Nigeria’s economic challenges — including rising food prices, insecurity, and worsening living conditions.

Commentaries accompanying the viral reports accused Mudi of promoting “government propaganda” at a time when many Nigerians are struggling to meet basic needs.

Analysts say the angry reaction from youths highlights the growing disconnect between political rhetoric and public sentiment.

Calls for Accountability

So far, neither the Delta APC leadership nor the Nigeria Police Force has issued an official statement confirming the circumstances of the assault or identifying those responsible.

The authenticity of some claims circulating online remains unverified, and it is unclear whether arrests have been made.

Observers stress that the incident highlights the dangers of political violence at party gatherings.

Analysts warn that disagreements over government policies must be expressed through lawful and peaceful means, not physical attacks.

They argue that violence undermines democratic engagement and erodes public trust in political institutions.

What Comes Next

The suspension of Commissioner Reuben is seen as a step toward accountability, but many insist that only a thorough investigation will establish the facts and restore confidence in the state’s political process.

Political watchers believe the case will test the government’s commitment to transparency and its ability to manage tensions within the ruling party.

As Delta State awaits the outcome of the investigation, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for tolerance, dialogue, and respect in Nigeria’s political space.

The health of the country’s democracy, analysts say, depends on leaders and citizens alike rejecting violence and embracing peaceful engagement.
