TDThe Nigerian Military has announced the successful neutralization of notorious terrorist kingpin Kachalla Ibrahim Battijo.

The feat marks a significant breakthrough in the fight against banditry and terrorism in north-central Nigeria.

The operation, carried out in Kogi State, dismantled key elements of Battijo’s criminal network and foiled a planned mass abduction of students.

According to Defense News Nigeria, the intelligence-led mission took place on June 10 near Iluke, where Battijo and his associates were preparing to abduct candidates sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The swift intervention by the Army’s 12 Brigade, supported by local vigilante groups, prevented what could have been one of the largest student kidnappings in recent years.

Military sources confirmed that Battijo was fatally wounded during the operation.

His body was later recovered from a forest hideout on June 15 and transported for autopsy.

Video footage circulating online shows soldiers navigating dense vegetation while carrying a body bag, with helicopters hovering above the scene — a testament to the scale and coordination of the mission.

Battijo, long regarded as one of the most dangerous bandit leaders in the region, was linked to multiple high-profile kidnappings, extortion rackets, and violent attacks across Kogi and neighboring states.

His network reportedly operated with sophisticated logistics, including forest camps and informant cells.

His operations make him a persistent threat to communities and travelers along major highways.

Security analysts note that Kogi State has increasingly become a hotspot for banditry due to its strategic location at the intersection of northern and southern Nigeria.

Criminal groups exploit the state’s forests and riverine terrain to stage attacks and evade security forces.

The neutralization of Battijo is therefore seen as a major morale boost for ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

Local residents and community leaders have welcomed the development.

They praising the military’s vigilance and urging sustained operations to ensure that remnants of Battijo’s network are fully dismantled.

Authorities have also called for stronger collaboration between security agencies and vigilante groups to consolidate gains.

This operation underscores the Nigerian Military’s renewed commitment to safeguarding schools, communities, and critical infrastructure from terrorist threats.

While challenges remain, the elimination of Battijo represents a decisive step toward restoring peace and stability in Kogi State and beyond.
