TD The political career of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been accompanied by a long list of contentious episodes.
From the $460,000 US forfeiture case and Chicago State University records controversy to the Alpha Beta dispute, bullion-van episode, presidential aircraft and yacht controversies, and allegations surrounding his son’s links to companies associated with a major federal infrastructure contractor.
Some have involved court proceedings or official records; others remain allegations or political controversies that were never established as criminal wrongdoing.
This report therefore distinguishes between documented facts, court findings, allegations and disputed claims.
1. The Tinubu $460,000 US forfeiture controversy
One of the most enduring controversies surrounding Tinubu dates back to the early 1990s, long before he became president.
US court records show that American authorities pursued a civil forfeiture proceeding involving funds held in bank accounts associated with Tinubu and others.
The case was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 1993.
On October 4, 1993, Judge John Nordberg ordered $460,000 in a First Heritage Bank account held in Tinubu’s name forfeited to the United States.
The court order stated that the funds represented proceeds of narcotics trafficking or were involved in financial transactions violating US money-laundering statutes.
However, an important legal distinction is frequently lost in political arguments over the case.
Tinubu was not criminally convicted of drug trafficking in that proceeding.
The matter was a civil forfeiture action against the money, rather than a criminal prosecution in which Tinubu was tried and sentenced.
In 2023, Nigeria’s Presidential Election Petition Court specifically ruled that the petitioners had failed to establish that Tinubu had been criminally arrested, convicted, fined or sentenced in the United States over the matter.
The settlement also provided for the release of other funds held in Citibank accounts to K.O. Tinubu, while the $460,000 was forfeited.
The episode nevertheless remains politically significant because the underlying US court record explicitly connected the forfeited funds to narcotics-trafficking proceeds or prohibited financial transactions.
Tinubu’s political opponents have repeatedly cited the case as evidence requiring greater scrutiny, while his defenders have stressed that there was no criminal conviction against him.
2. Chicago State University certificate controversy
The controversy over Tinubu’s educational records became one of the biggest issues surrounding the 2023 presidential election and has continued to generate debate.
Tinubu has maintained that he graduated from Chicago State University (CSU) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1979.
During litigation initiated in the United States by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, CSU was ordered to release records relating to Tinubu’s attendance and academic history.
The university produced records confirming that Tinubu attended the institution and graduated.
However, the proceedings generated questions about the diploma submitted by Tinubu to Nigeria’s electoral authorities.
CSU’s registrar, Caleb Westberg, testified that the university possessed Tinubu’s original academic record.
Westberg, however, said he could not independently authenticate the particular diploma submitted to INEC because that specific document was not in the university’s possession.
Tinubu’s lawyers subsequently argued that differences in the documents resulted from clerical errors and changes in the university’s certificate format.
These include differences in the graduation date, logo, font and signatures.
The controversy intensified after CSU released documents showing different dates of birth in records associated with Tinubu.
The university records included March 29, 1954, while an earlier admissions document contained March 29, 1955.
Tinubu’s Nigerian official records have long used March 29, 1952.
However, the Supreme Court of Nigeria ultimately declined to consider Atiku’s new US-derived evidence in the presidential-election appeal because the alleged new facts had not formed part of the original petition before the lower tribunal.
The Supreme Court nevertheless upheld Tinubu’s election victory in October 2023.
Consequently, the certificate controversy remains a matter of public and political debate.
3. The Tinubu Versus Alpha Beta controversy
Another longstanding controversy involves Alpha Beta Consulting, the company that has provided tax-revenue collection and consultancy services to Lagos State.
The dispute intensified after Oladapo Apara, a former managing director of Alpha Beta, accused Tinubu and others of financial misconduct.
Apara alleged that Tinubu controlled Alpha Beta through proxies and that billions of naira had been diverted from the company’s operations.
In court filings, Apara alleged that more than ₦20 billion had been transferred to private accounts.
He also separately made allegations concerning tax evasion, money laundering, forgery and other corporate misconduct.
Apara also claimed that Alpha Beta had received substantial commissions from Lagos State’s internally generated revenue system.
The allegations were strongly disputed by Alpha Beta, which accused Apara of misconduct and financial wrongdoing of his own.
The litigation ultimately did not produce a judicial finding that Tinubu committed the alleged fraud.
In 2022, the parties reached an out-of-court settlement, and the litigation was terminated.
Bloomberg reported that the dispute had been resolved without a court determination on the underlying accusations.
Thus, the Alpha Beta episode is best described as a major corporate and political controversy involving allegations against Tinubu.
4. The 2019 bullion-van controversy
Just before Nigeria’s 2019 presidential election, photographs and videos showing two bullion vans entering Tinubu’s Bourdillon residence in Lagos went viral.
The sighting generated widespread speculation that the vehicles were carrying large amounts of cash intended for election-related activities.
Tinubu subsequently confirmed that the vehicles were associated with money, but denied that the money was government money or that it was intended for vote buying.
He said: “Is it my money or government money?”
Tinubu maintained that he was entitled to keep and spend his own money and insisted that the money was not being used to buy votes.
The episode was never established in court as evidence of an election-related crime.
The controversy nevertheless became one of the most enduring images associated with Tinubu’s political career, particularly because it occurred immediately before the presidential election.
5. The Tinubu foreign-bank-account controversy
Before becoming president, Tinubu was prosecuted before the Code of Conduct Tribunal over allegations that he operated foreign bank accounts while serving as Lagos governor between 1999 and 2007.
The government initially accused him of operating multiple foreign accounts and failing to properly declare them.
Tinubu was arraigned before the tribunal in 2011.
However, the Code of Conduct Tribunal ultimately dismissed and quashed the charges, holding that the prosecution’s case was legally defective.
The ruling therefore did not amount to a finding that Tinubu had committed the alleged offence.
It remains controversial because the prosecution had alleged that he operated foreign accounts while serving as governor.
Nonetheless, the case ended because of defects in the charge and prosecution process.
6. The presidential-jet controversy
The controversy over presidential spending resurfaced dramatically in 2024, when the Tinubu administration acquired an Airbus A330 for the Presidential Air Fleet.
The aircraft replaced a 19-year-old Boeing 737-700 BBJ acquired during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Reports placed the cost of the aircraft at around $100 million, although the Presidency did not initially disclose the purchase price publicly.
The Presidency defended the acquisition, saying the aircraft was purchased below market price and would reduce maintenance and fuel expenses.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, said replacing the older aircraft followed concerns over its safety record and operational costs.
The controversy centred on transparency, procurement and the timing of the expenditure, particularly amid Nigeria’s severe cost-of-living crisis.
It is important, however, to distinguish reports estimating the aircraft’s cost from an officially disclosed appropriation figure.
The aircraft’s acquisition remains a political controversy over public expenditure.
7. The ₦5 billion presidential-yacht controversy
Another major spending controversy erupted in 2023 when the government’s supplementary budget contained a ₦5.095 billion allocation for a presidential yacht.
The proposal generated widespread public criticism because it came shortly after the removal of the petrol subsidy and amid rising inflation and economic hardship.
The Presidency subsequently argued that the vessel was a Nigerian Navy operational asset, rather than a personal yacht for Tinubu.
The House of Representatives nevertheless removed the allocation from the supplementary budget.
It redirected the money towards other spending, including the student-loan programme.
The Senate had initially retained the provision before the final legislative process removed it.
8. Tinubu’s age and identity controversies
Questions about Tinubu’s age and biographical history have followed him for decades and became particularly prominent during the 2023 presidential campaign.
His official Nigerian records identify his date of birth as March 29, 1952.
However, documents released during the Chicago State University litigation contained different birth years, including 1954 and 1955.
These discrepancies have been repeatedly cited by critics as evidence of inconsistencies in Tinubu’s biography.
They should not, however, be converted into unsupported claims about his actual age or identity.
There are several findings that Tinubu’s identity is either false or that he secretly has another date of birth.
Interestingly, various claims circulating online about his family background, original identity and alleged biographical history remain on hot bed.
9. The Tinubu Guinea-passport controversy
Another recurring issue has concerned claims that Tinubu held a Guinean diplomatic passport.
The controversy became particularly prominent during the 2023 election period.
Critics questioned whether the possession of another country’s passport affected his eligibility to contest Nigeria’s presidency.
The broader issue was intertwined with questions concerning citizenship, nationality and the information contained in his election documents.
Tinubu’s legal opponents raised several eligibility arguments during the presidential-election litigation.
However, the Nigerian courts ultimately did not disqualify Tinubu from the presidency on this basis, and the Supreme Court upheld his election in October 2023.
Claims about his identity or nationality existed, but the courts did not invalidate his election on those grounds.
10. “Tinubu Owns Lagos” controversy
Long before his presidency, Tinubu developed a powerful political network in Lagos.
His eight-year tenure as governor, from 1999 to 2007, and his subsequent influence over Lagos politics have generated extensive debate over his relationships with political allies and business figures.
Critics have accused him of using political influence to build an extensive patronage network.
Supporters, by contrast, have credited his administration with reforms in Lagos’s tax and revenue systems, urban development and public finance.
Some of the controversies surrounding this network have resulted in lawsuits or investigations, while others have remained political allegations.
The Alpha Beta dispute is one of the clearest examples because it moved from political criticism into formal litigation.
