A viral video has captured a tense confrontation as traveller challenges officers over a traditional necklace and demands an explanation for their actions
The traveller, a farmer travelling from Akwa Ibom State to Rivers State, accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force of assault and unlawful seizure of his personal property.
He also accused them of extortion during the roadside stop, according to allegations accompanying a circulating video.
The traveller alleged that officers stopped him along his route, subjected him to physical violence and accused him of wearing a charm because of a traditional necklace he was wearing.
He further claimed that the officers seized the necklace and demanded ₦30,000 before allowing him to continue his journey.
The allegations have raised concerns about police conduct, citizens’ rights during stop-and-search operations and the need for accountability when officers are accused of abusing their authority.
The claims of physical assault, theft and extortion were captured in the video.
However, This Dawn News has yet to establish whether the police authorities have opened an investigation into this specific incident.
Video Captures Confrontation Over Necklace
In the video transcript supplied alongside the allegations, officers can be heard questioning the traveller about a necklace around his neck.
One officer repeatedly instructs him to raise or remove the necklace, while the traveller asks why he is being ordered to do so and insists that it is simply his necklace.
The exchange becomes increasingly confrontational as an officer questions the nature of the item and directs the man to open his bag.
The officers also instruct him to remove his glasses and put away his phone.
At different points, the traveller asks what he has done wrong and accuses the officers of oppressing him.
The officers, meanwhile, refer to him as a criminal and insist that he comply with their instructions.
The transcript also captures a disagreement over whether he should accompany the officers to a police office for further investigation.
The footage provides evidence of a tense encounter and the dispute over the necklace.
By itself, however, it does not establish every allegation made about what happened before or after the recorded exchange.
Traveller Alleges Assault and Unlawful Seizure
In his account accompanying the video, the traveller listed three alleged violations.
First, alleged assault:
He claimed that officers subjected him to unprovoked physical violence during the stop and beat him without justification.
Second, alleged seizure of personal property:
He said the officers took his traditional necklace, which he claimed to have legitimately purchased in Ghana.
According to him, they labelled it a charm to justify confiscating it.
Third, alleged extortion:
He alleged that an officer demanded and collected ₦30,000 before permitting him to leave.
These are serious allegations.
If substantiated, they would warrant investigation into the officers’ conduct, the circumstances of the stop and the legal basis for any search, detention or seizure of property.
The available material does not independently confirm the alleged beating, the circumstances under which the necklace was taken or the alleged payment.
No receipt, payment record or independent witness account was provided in the material reviewed for this report.
Questions Over Police Stop-and-Search Practices
The confrontation raises broader questions about how roadside checks are conducted and whether officers adequately explain the reasons for their actions.
Police officers have lawful responsibilities to prevent crime, investigate suspected offences and protect the public.
Those responsibilities must be exercised within the law and with respect for the rights and dignity of citizens.
A personal necklace or other traditional item should not, merely because an officer suspects it to be a charm, automatically be treated as proof that its wearer has committed a crime.
Where officers reasonably suspect that an item is connected to an offence, its seizure and any further investigation should follow applicable legal procedures.
Likewise, allegations that an individual was assaulted or compelled to pay money to secure release require a formal response from the relevant police command.
The police should be able to explain:
- the reason for the stop,
- whether any offence was suspected,
- whether the traveller was formally detained,
- whether the necklace was recorded as an exhibit, and,
- whether any money changed hands.
Previous Extortion Allegations Have Prompted Police Investigations
The incident comes amid continuing public scrutiny of allegations of extortion and misconduct involving police officers in Nigeria.
In a separate case reported on June 23, 2026, the Rivers State Police Command ordered the arrest and detention of officers captured in a viral video allegedly extorting motorists.
The command said an investigation had been ordered and that officers found culpable would face disciplinary action.
In another development, the Rivers command had commenced an investigation into allegations involving Assistant Superintendent of Police Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers following a separate viral video.
Those cases are distinct from the incident involving the traveller and do not establish that the allegations in the current video are true.
They nevertheless illustrate the importance of prompt investigations when evidence of alleged misconduct is brought to the attention of police authorities.
Police Command Urged to Investigate
The relevant police command needs to establish where the incident occurred, identify the officers involved and obtain the traveller’s full account.
Investigators should also examine the complete, unedited video, interview available witnesses and establish whether the necklace was seized and whether the alleged ₦30,000 payment occurred.
If the allegations are substantiated, appropriate disciplinary or legal action should follow.
If the footage has been presented without important context, the authorities should provide a clear explanation supported by evidence.
As of the time of writing, no verified police statement specifically addressing the traveller’s allegations has been identified in the sources reviewed for this report.
The identities of the officers, the exact location of the encounter and the date of the incident also remain unconfirmed.
Accountability Is Essential to Public Trust
The video has brought attention to a confrontation that deserves a transparent explanation.
Citizens should be able to travel without fear of unlawful treatment, while police officers must be able to carry out legitimate duties without interference.
Where an officer is accused of assault, unlawful seizure or extortion, the appropriate response is a fair and independent investigation—not a presumption of guilt or automatic dismissal of the complaint.
The key questions remain:
- Why was the traveller stopped?
- Was his necklace seized?
- Was he assaulted, and,
- Was ₦30,000 demanded or collected?
The Nigeria Police Force should clarify the circumstances of the incident and disclose the outcome of any investigation so that the allegations can be assessed on evidence rather than speculation.
