TD SEO Headline: APC Thugs Shoot NDC Members During Ward Meeting in Enugu, Party Names Eight Victims

Meta Description:

ENUGU, Enugu State — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has identified eight of its members who it said sustained gunshot injuries when armed men disrupted a ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The incident, caught on record, occurred on Saturday, September 12, 2026.

Watch the video clip below:

The incident occurred during a monthly ward meeting of the opposition party at Ihuani Awkunanaw, Obuoffia, the hometown of the party’s Enugu State governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Christian Ohaa.

The NDC has accused suspected state-sponsored political thugs of carrying out the attack.

It alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is unsettled by its growing political presence.

The Enugu State Police Command, however, has not publicly attributed the attack to the APC or identified the perpetrators.

Eight NDC Members Identified

In a statement issued by Ohaa’s media aide, Hon. Sampson Ukwu, the NDC identified the eight members who it said were shot as:

  1. Onovo Donald Ekene
  2. Ngene Godwin Madueke
  3. Ogbodo Gloria
  4. Onovo Victor
  5. Maduabuchi Ugwu
  6. Nnaemeka Nelson
  7. Chinonso Nwagbara
  8. Obinna Daniel Owo

The party said its members had gathered for the state-wide monthly ward meeting when armed hoodlums allegedly stormed the venue and opened fire.

It also alleged that canopies, chairs and other political materials were vandalised during the incident.

Police Confirm Attack, Say Two Were Injured

The Enugu State Police Command separately confirmed that an NDC ward meeting at Ndiuno-Obuoffia was disrupted by armed hoodlums who allegedly fired sporadically.

According to the police, two attendees were injured in the attack.

The Command also confirmed a separate incident at St Joseph Primary School, Agbani.

There, hoodlums allegedly destroyed canopies and chairs prepared for a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally.

Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa subsequently directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to thoroughly investigate both incidents and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The police said officers were deployed to the affected locations after receiving reports of the incidents, both to prevent further breaches and to track down fleeing suspects.

The Command, however, noted that there had been no prior notification or request for police security coverage for either political gathering.

NDC Accuses State-Sponsored Thugs

The NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, on Monday escalated the party’s allegations, describing the attackers as state-sponsored thugs.

Director said the attack was an assault not only on NDC members but also on democratic participation and freedom of association.

“This incessant assault on our members by state-sponsored thugs must stop,” the NDC said.

The party accused the ruling APC in Enugu of being “jittery” over what it described as the growing momentum of the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections.

The allegation, however, has not been established by the police investigation, which remains ongoing.

Party Claims Pattern of Political Attacks

The NDC also alleged that the Obuoffia incident was not isolated.

According to the party, similar disruptions had previously occurred during its political activities in Akpugo and Obe wards in Nkanu West, where it alleged that peaceful gatherings were disrupted by gunfire and property destruction.

The party called on the Enugu State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to investigate the latest incident, identify those behind it and prosecute them.

“The lives of our members matter,” the party said.

Ohaa Vows NDC Will Not Be Intimidated

Reacting to the attack, NDC governorship candidate Chinyeaka Ohaa vowed that the party would continue its political activities despite the violence.

Ohaa said:

“The entire NDC family in Enugu State remain undeterred. We will not be intimidated. We will not abandon our people.”

He added that the party would continue its “peaceful and issue-based campaign” ahead of the 2027 elections and called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack.

The party also cited Sections 33 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which protect the rights to life and peaceful assembly and association.

NDC Demands Investigation Into Attackers

The latest incident has raised fresh concerns about political violence ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, particularly as opposition parties intensify grassroots mobilisation.

The NDC is demanding a full investigation to determine who organised the attack, identify the gunmen and establish whether any individuals or political organisations sponsored the violence.

For now, the police investigation remains the key avenue for determining the identities and affiliations of the attackers.

While the NDC has linked the attack to political interests and accused state-sponsored actors, there is currently no police confirmation that APC members or officials were responsible.
