Orodo, Imo State — Residents and activists have raised alarm over the appalling condition of the School for the Deaf and Dumb in Orodo, Imo State. A viral video from the institution shows dilapidated hostels, poor sanitation, and lack of basic amenities, sparking outrage and calls for urgent government intervention.
The footage captures emotional pleas from concerned citizens who described the living conditions as “unfit for human beings”.
They noted that students are forced to endure overcrowded dormitories infested with bedbugs and without access to clean water or functional toilets.

The school, which is government-owned, has reportedly been neglected for years.
Citizens lamented that the institution is hidden away with barely visible signage, making it almost invisible to the public.
“These children may not hear or speak, but they are human beings.
“The least any government could do is give them a good life,” one activist said in the video.
The speaker accused political leaders of ignoring the plight of vulnerable children while focusing on election campaigns.
They called out lawmakers, senators, and the Ministry of Education for failing to uphold their responsibilities.
The video also included a direct appeal to President Bola Tinubu, who is expected to visit Imo State soon.
The campaigners urged him to add the school to his agenda, stressing that the students are “living like animals” due to neglect.
They demanded immediate action to provide decent accommodation, water supply, and improved welfare for the children.
The incident has intensified public debate about the treatment of persons with disabilities in Nigeria and the need for stronger accountability in the education sector.
