TD IME OBI ANAMBRA SERIES — In Southern Anambra, when rain starts beating the roof like a talking drum, the people do not just fold their arms indifferently. The elders look up and smile. “The sky is speaking,” they say, “and the ground must answer.” That answer is Umi.

Umi is not big grammar. It is a hole. A simple pit dug in the corner of the compound where water from the thatched roof, and later zinc roof, falls and gathers. It looks small. But “it is the little ant that carries the big leaf.” The Umi carries the whole compound.

My maternal grandmother in Ihiala called her Umi her “second tap.” When NEPA takes light and the borehole refuses to work, the Umi does not complain. During the rainy season, it opens its mouth wide and drinks.

Then in the dry season, from November to March, when the sun becomes a harsh landlord and the streams begin to hide, the Umi pays back.

The water is used for washing clothes, bathing children, cooking, and watering the ugu behind the house. “He who saves water in the rainy season does not beg in the dry season.”

But Umi does more than store water. It is also a soldier. Anambra soil is soft and restless. Rain does not knock before it enters.

If you let the water from the roof run anyhow, it will cut a gully across your yard and carry your cassava with it. The Umi stands in the way and says, “Your journey ends here.”

It breaks the speed of the water and lets it sink gently into the ground. That is how one small pit can stop erosion from eating a whole compound.

There is history inside this hole. During the colonial Ten-Year Plan, government asked communities to build rainwater harvesting systems from their roofs.

The people brought sand and labour. This tells us that Umi was not invented yesterday. It has been living with us.

In places like Aguata, Nnewi South, and Orumba, boreholes go so deep that your pocket will feel the weight.

Rivers are mostly far from the homesteads. So every house needed its own water. The Umi made sure of that.

As population grew, the Umi became even more important. A man without an Umi was like a man without a cup at a feast.

Our people also understood health. My maternal grandmother would cover the Umi with plywood so that leaves and lizards would not enter.

She would allow the water to settle, then boil it before drinking. “Water that is fetched with care does not break the pot.”

Today, old wisdom and new science are shaking hands.

Some young people now say that the Umi is “local” and prefer tap water. But we all know how that story ends.

The tap dries. The pipe bursts. And the bill comes anyway. The climate is also changing. Rain is not as regular as before.

The wise thing is not to throw away the Umi. The wise thing is to upgrade it. Because “one does not cut off his leg because his shoe is torn.”

The story of Umi is a story we must tell. It is the story of a people who did not wait for government to bring water in a tanker.

It is the story of people who looked at the roof and the ground and made peace between them.

When visitors come, they ask, “What is that big hole for?” The children answer with pride, “That is our Umi. It catches rain and fights erosion.”

That pride matters. Because a people who forget their own solutions will always be waiting for someone else to save them.

So the next time you hear rain on your roof, remember Umi. Remember that a hole can be a bank.

A hole can be a shield. A hole can be peace in the house.

As my grandmother would say while pointing to her Umi, “When the sky remembers to cry, the wise man has already dug a place for the tears to fall.”
