MAIDUGURI, Borno State — Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have reportedly neutralised several Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, including a high-profile member of the group’s Shura Council, during a failed terrorist attack on military positions in Kukawa, Borno State.

This Dawn NewsThe military said the engagement took place on October 31, 2026, when combined troops deployed in Kukawa repelled a major ISWAP assault with support from ground and air components.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East).

The military identified the senior ISWAP figure reportedly neutralised as Abu Hajara, a member of the group’s Shura Council.

The military described the operation as a significant setback for ISWAP’s leadership and operational capabilities.

It added that the successful defence of the military positions demonstrated the combat readiness and firepower of Operation HADIN KAI personnel.

The attack in Kukawa occurred barely three days after another major engagement in Buni Yadi, where the military said 55 terrorists had been neutralised.

Among those reportedly killed in the Buni Yadi operation were key commanders identified as Ali Mandara Abba Gajiri, also known as Munzir; Habu Ikkima Nakif Yana Faruk; and Commander Gogore.

Military Reaffirms Commitment to Counterterrorism Operations

Following the troops’ successes against ISWAP, the Theatre Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting law-abiding residents and sustaining military operations against terrorist groups across the North-East.

It said troops would continue operations aimed at eliminating terrorist elements and destroying their camps in the region.

The latest engagements form part of the ongoing military campaign under Operation HADIN KAI to contain insurgent activities and restore security in Borno and other parts of the North-East.

The military statement was signed by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Maiduguri.

This Dawn News notes that the casualty figures and identities of the individuals reportedly killed are based on the military’s operational statement.
