TD Lagos, Nigeria — Former Anambra State governor and 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the passing of legendary Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs.
Olu Jacobs died at the age of 84 on September 16, 2026.
Obi’s Condolence Message
In a heartfelt tribute posted on his official X account, Obi described Jacobs as a symbol of Nigerian excellence whose career embodied talent, discipline, professionalism, and dedication.
He wrote:
“Olu Jacobs represented the excellence of the Nigerian spirit.
“He exemplified this through his remarkable contributions to the film and creative industry, in a career spanning several decades across both Britain and Nigeria.”
Obi reflected on the brevity of life and the duty of every individual to contribute fully to society.
He noted that Jacobs lived a life that demonstrated the power of talent and commitment to one’s craft.
A Career of Distinction
Jacobs, born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs in 1942, trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.
He will later build a career that spanned British stage and television, international films, and Nollywood.
He appeared in productions such as The Dogs of War and Pirates before returning to Nigeria.
There he became one of Nollywood’s most respected patriarchs, starring in over 100 films and mentoring younger actors.
Obi’s Call to Reflection
Obi used the occasion to remind Nigerians of the importance of giving their best in whatever responsibility they are entrusted with:
“His passing is once again a reminder to all of us that our time here is limited.
“Whatever responsibility we are entrusted with, and whatever area we are called to contribute to society, we must give it our very best and ensure that society benefits from our genius, talent and competence.”
