TDThe leadership dispute within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a decisive turn as the Supreme Court of Nigeria scheduled April 22, 2026, for the hearing of key appeals challenging earlier court rulings on the party’s leadership structure.
The development follows proceedings at the apex court where parties involved sought an accelerated hearing to resolve the matter promptly.
Court Grants Accelerated Hearing
During the session, lead counsel for the Kabiru Turaki-led PDP faction, Chris Uche, urged the court to abridge the timeline for filing legal processes.
He argued that the urgency of the situation required a departure from standard court procedures to ensure swift resolution.
Counsel for the respondents, including E.C. Ukala, did not oppose the request but initially sought 15 days to file their response.
Similarly, counsel representing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kingsley Magbim, requested 10 days.
However, the court ruled in favor of expedited proceedings.
It granted only five days for respondents to file their briefs and two days for the appellants to submit replies where necessary.
All filings are expected to be completed on or before April 21, ahead of the substantive hearing on April 22.

Related Appeal Also Scheduled
In a related matter involving Sule Lamido, the Supreme Court adopted a similar approach.
Lead counsel Paul Erokoro applied for an abridgment of time and accelerated hearing, citing the importance of timely adjudication.
The application was not opposed by any of the respondents, prompting the court to grant the request.
The case has also been scheduled for hearing on April 22, 2026, alongside the primary PDP leadership dispute.
Background of the Dispute
The appeals challenge earlier rulings by the Court of Appeal, which upheld judgments delivered by Justices Omotosho and Lifu on the PDP leadership crisis.
The legal battle reflects deep divisions within the opposition party, with multiple factions laying claim to legitimacy.
Political analysts note that the outcome of the Supreme Court’s decision could significantly shape the future of the PDP.
It could also influence Nigeria’s broader political landscape.
Party Calls for Unity and Faith
In a statement signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, party members were urged to remain steadfast and hopeful as the legal process unfolds.
The statement emphasized the importance of the judiciary, describing the Supreme Court as the “last hope of the common man”.
It expressed confidence that the court would deliver a judgment that upholds democracy and prevents the emergence of a one-party state.
With both cases now set for hearing on April 22, attention shifts to the Supreme Court.
Those rulings are expected to provide clarity on the PDP’s leadership crisis and potentially reshape Nigeria’s opposition politics.
