TDThe authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have issued a press statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the proposed lecture by former Presidential Candidate and two-term Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Peter Obi.

According to the University, a particular group within the Students’ body extended the invitation to Mr. Obi to deliver a lecture within the University premises.

However, the management explained that it was only formally notified of the calibre of the guest on Friday, just a day before the scheduled programme.

Importance of Prior Notification

The statement emphasised that events involving high-profile personalities require adequate prior notification to the University authorities.

This is necessary to enable the institution to make proper logistical and security arrangements.

Arrangements include liaising with relevant agencies such as the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Such measures, the University noted, are critical to ensuring the safety of the guest, members of the University community, and the general public.

Reason for Non-Approval of OAU Oduduwa Hall

The University authorities decried the given short notice and the attendant inability to complete these arrangements.

They explained that they could not approve the use of Oduduwa Hall for the event as requested by the organisers.

The decision, according to the statement, was taken purely in the interest of safety, orderliness, and adherence to established protocols governing the use of University facilities.

OAU Assures Respect for Peter Obi

The University stressed that the decision should not be misconstrued as a reflection of disregard for Mr. Obi.

On the contrary, OAU stated that it holds him in high esteem as a distinguished personality.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting intellectual engagements and hosting distinguished personalities.

He noted, however, that such events must follow due process and be communicated with adequate notice to allow for proper planning.

OAU Calls for Compliance with Procedures

The authorities urged members of the University community, students, and the general public to always comply with laid-down procedures when planning events within the institution.

The statement concluded by reminding stakeholders that they are all partners in progress, working collectively for the overall development of the University.
