TDPolitical discussions intensified yesterday following reports that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has zoned the Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency House of Representatives ticket to Ekwusigo Local Government Area.
The decision has stirred reactions across the three LGAs of the constituency — Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo — with aspirants and stakeholders weighing in on the implications for 2027.
One of the most recent voices in the debate, Chukwumaife Caleb Okeke-Enyobi, Managing Director of Explore Nnewi Urban, warned against any such undemocratic move.
Okeke-Enyobi, however, called for unity and strategic representation.
Okeke-Enyobi’s Position
Speaking on the zoning development, Okeke-Enyobi emphasized the need to avoid fragmentation in the wake of the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, a towering figure in the constituency’s politics.
“In the absence of our late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, we cannot afford a fragmented house.
“I am running to provide a seamless transition, one that maintains our influence in Abuja while instituting a formal Constituency Stakeholders Forum where the leaders of all three LGAs have a permanent seat at the table to decide our priorities.”
Legislative Shield for Nnewi North
Okeke-Enyobi highlighted the economic importance of Nnewi North.
He stressed the need for what he termed a “Legislative Shield” to protect the constituency’s industrial climate.
He pledged to continue the legacy of safeguarding local manufacturing through robust federal security presence.
He also promised to push for policies favoring indigenous industries, ensuring that Nnewi’s business ecosystem remains competitive and secure.
Leveraging Ekwusigo’s Strategic Position
While rejecting the zoning decision, Okeke-Enyobi underscored that his vision transcends geographical considerations:
“I understand the calls for Ekwusigo to take the lead.
“However, my focus is not just on where the candidate comes from, but on ensuring that Ekwusigo’s strategic position as a transit and agricultural hub is leveraged to attract federal ‘Dry Port’ status and erosion control funds.”
Giving Nnewi South Its Due
Okeke-Enyobi also pointed to Nnewi South, which he described as the constituency’s “silent partner” despite having the largest polling units and grassroots voting strength.
He pledged to ensure that Nnewi South receives greater federal appointments and infrastructure projects.
His goal, he said, is to guarantee that the LGA’s strong electoral participation translates into tangible dividends.
Political Implications
Analysts note that Okeke-Enyobi’s remarks reflect a broader push to balance representation across the three LGAs while maintaining unity within the NDC.
His proposal for a Constituency Stakeholders Forum could serve as a mechanism to institutionalize inclusivity and prevent factional disputes.
As zoning debates continue, the constituency’s political future appears set for intense negotiations.
In the meantime, aspirants are positioning themselves as bridge-builders in a delicate transition period.
This development reflects ongoing political discussions and aspirant declarations.
Official confirmation of NDC’s zoning decision and final candidate selection is still pending.
