TD KANO, Nigeria — September 9, 2026: Popular Kano-based social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu has reportedly been killed at his residence in Kano State, with his body discovered in a pool of blood.
The death was confirmed on Wednesday by local authorities and eyewitnesses.
Dan Shagamu was reportedly found dead at his home after he was allegedly overpowered by his attackers and brutally slaughtered.
Who was Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu?
Dan Shagamu, who operated under the name Dan-Shagamu International, was known for producing social media videos and political commentary covering political, religious and community issues.
Multiple reports identified him as a prominent social media personality in Kano.
His death has generated shock among followers and residents, with tributes and expressions of grief emerging on social media.
The precise circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear as of Wednesday evening.
Several unverified accounts circulating on social media have alleged that the attack involved “yankan rago,” a Hausa expression commonly used to describe throat-slitting.
However, this particular detail has not been independently confirmed by the police or another official investigative authority.
It should, therefore, be treated as an allegation rather than established fact.
There is also no verified information yet establishing the identity of the attackers, their motive, how they gained access to the residence, or whether anything was taken from the home.
According to available information, the circumstances of the killing remained unclear and the police had not publicly announced arrests in connection with the case at the time of publication.
Amnesty International Raises Political-violence Concerns
Amnesty International Nigeria condemned what it described as the brutal killing of the commentator.
The public watchdog called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the killing of a social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu whose body was found today in a pool of blood at his home in Kano,” the organisation said in a statement published on Wednesday.

Amnesty further urged the Nigerian authorities, including the Nigeria Police Force, to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone suspected of involvement is brought to justice.
Amnesty International Nigeria linked the killing to broader concerns about politically related threats and intimidation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
“As the elections approach, we continue to receive disturbing reports of politically related threats to life and intimidation,” the organisation said.
It, meanwhile, called for those responsible for Dan Shagamu’s death to be prosecuted.
However, there is currently no sufficient evidence publicly establishing that Dan Shagamu was killed because of his political views or commentary.
The motive therefore remains a key question for investigators.
Investigation demanded
The killing comes at a politically sensitive period as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
It raises fresh concerns about the safety of journalists, activists, political commentators and other Nigerians who express political opinions publicly.
Amnesty International called on the authorities to ensure a credible investigation and accountability for the killing.
As of the latest reports reviewed by This Dawn News, no suspect had been publicly identified or arrested in connection with the killing.
This is still a developing story.
This medium will update this report as verified information emerges from the police, family members, witnesses or other credible sources.
