TD Turkey has issued an international arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Turkey accused him of genocide and crimes against humanity linked to the 2025 Gaza-bound “Global Sumud Flotilla” incident.

The Istanbul 11th High Criminal Court’s decision marks a major escalation in Ankara’s legal campaign against Israeli officials.

Turkey also requested Interpol red notices to make Netanyahu internationally wanted.

Background of the Case Against Netanyahu

  • Court Decision: On July 14, 2026, the Istanbul 11th High Criminal Court issued an international arrest warrant for Netanyahu and several Israeli officials.
  • Charges: The indictment includes genocide, crimes against humanity, intentional injury, torture, aggravated robbery, property damage, and deprivation of liberty.
  • Legal Basis: Turkish prosecutors claim jurisdiction under international maritime law, citing the interception of civilian vessels in international waters.
  • Interpol Action: On August 21, 2026, Turkey’s Justice Minister Akın Gürlek confirmed that Ankara had requested Interpol red notices for Netanyahu and Israeli naval commander Afek Moskovitch, seeking global enforcement of the arrest orders.

The “Global Sumud Flotilla” Incident

  • The flotilla was named after the Arabic word Sumud, which means “steadfastness”.

It was organized by international activists in late 2025 to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s naval blockade.

  • In October 2025, Israeli forces intercepted the ships in international waters.

Israeli forces detained hundreds of activists—including high-profile figures like Greta Thunberg—and seized the vessels.

  • Turkey alleges that the operation constituted a military assault on civilians, violating international law.

Political and Diplomatic Fallout Between Turkey and Netanyahu

  • Turkey’s Position: Justice Minister Gürlek stated that Ankara “will not allow crimes committed in Gaza to be covered up or protected by impunity.

Gürlek emphasized President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s commitment to holding Israeli leaders accountable.

  • Israel’s Response: Netanyahu dismissed the charges as “absurd,” accusing Erdoğan of hypocrisy and human rights abuses against Kurds.

Israeli ministers Israel Katz and Itamar Ben-Gvir also condemned the indictment, calling Erdoğan a “paper tiger.”

  • Turkey’s Counter: The Turkish Foreign Ministry responded by labeling Netanyahu “the Hitler of our time,” intensifying tensions between Ankara and Jerusalem.

International Implications for Turkey and Israel

The arrest warrant is symbolic but unprecedented, as it challenges the diplomatic immunity of a sitting head of government.

Analysts note that while Interpol may not act on politically motivated requests, the move underscores Turkey’s effort to position itself as a global advocate for Palestinian rights.

The case could further strain Turkey–Israel relations, already tense over Gaza and regional military operations.

Disclaimer:

These developments are based on official Turkish court filings and statements as of August 2026.

The charges against Netanyahu remain allegations, and no international body has yet validated or enforced Turkey’s warrant.
